Seems like higher education (MBA, JD, etc) and things outside of aviation nowadays seems to trump ambassadorship to the profession such as due paying, CP, Check Airman, PIC time and longevity.
The people from my company that left and went to DAL/UAL/AK etc and had me scratching my head about what the above airlines were thinking all had one thing in common: Lots of outside degrees and just barely enough aviation experience. Just saying.
The degrees, volunteering, community service etc seems to be more valuable than actual aviation experience.
At some point the airplane still needs to be flown. Safely.

I am guessing most of us have not done the "extras" to warrant the selection. Having said that, I have put in the work to get those extras and still have nothing to show for the effort. I think once we have over 10k hours, they become less interested in us because they think we are an old dog that cannot learn new tricks.
The game has changed, we must adapt or die. Yeah, it sucks.

I am a FAA designated 121 check airman now (ability to conduct fed rides), is that classified as FAA Approved Program Examiner in Airline Apps. I emailed them, and received no response. FYI, I only have the Check Airman box ticked.

Hm. Perhaps it's not them but it's you? We work at the same place. I know the same people and they were all qualified enough to get the job and quite frankly almost all of them are good people and good pilots. Judging by all your posts about job fairs, degrees, volunteer work and what not it sounds like it's more of a personal thing vs the airlines are screwed up in their hiring practices... Perhaps you should tell them that in person at the next job fair eh? 😉
Heck I remember JB was impossible to get on. You needed not only 1000 TPIC but they wanted 1000 TPIC in jets that weighed greater than 25,000 lbs! Now it's a "stepping stone" for a lot of pilots. Now we have Airbus Captains at Spirit at 25 years old and unhappy and treating that like a regional.
I'm just a guy with some observations is all. Maybe I'm talking too much on this forum lately. If so, thanks for pointing it out.

Until these companies match the legacies in pay/ work rules and qol, they'll continue to be stepping stones.
Depending upon age it make sense to jump ship to a legacy in A LOT of cases when you break out a spreadsheet and compare the numbers.
Money talks, Bull**** walks.
