It always goes silly when we start comparing apples to oranges. If we are going to do this, we have to have a benchmark in place and use specifics.
My hat is off to our veterans, no question.
To tell you the truth, I EXPECT our military pilots to perform at a high standard, and the same of guys like me (100% civilian).
No matter what your background, if any pilot makes my tie go up at a 70 degree angle (when it's not supposed to be), or can't land in the touchdown zone...you may not need to be there.

AA hiring in the last cycle required 6-8 yrs experience to be qualified. That meant approx. 1000hrs fighter, 2000 hrs mil hvy, or 3500 civilian.
If you fly with enough guys you realize the pilot's background doesn't make the individual and at a certain point longevity(TT) can be seriously overrated.

The good news for future street hires is that the majority of the flows are in their late forties/early fifties so likely won't be senior but younger to an OTS.
