Not true. Emirates flew Hamburg to JFk many years ago. They tried to make it work but finally threw in the towel. It's difficult to make a international route work if you don't feed it heavily from at least one end.

I think the environment is MUCH different in Italy nowadays with the virtual collapse of their economy and their airline Alitalia. Evidently Emirates had the blessing of the Italian government to do this route (obviously).
From what I've heard, the Dubai-Milan both ways are packed full but the JFK portions not as much. Haven't heard of an exact load factor on those legs yet.
Also, Emirates has a number of flights that don't always go in and out of Dubai. We have several flights each and every dayfrom Singapore, Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Melbourne and Sydney that go on to mostly Australian/New Zealand destinations. Honestly don't know if those flights can pick up Local pax for those trips or not. I know there's been talk about Emirates going 'round the world with flight into either NZ or Ozz and then on to Hawaii or LAX/SFO. Seems possible now with the hookup with Qantas.
This place is a machine…. it truly seems to be a juggernaut and as much incompetence as I see here, it amazingly just continues to roll along inspite of itself.
Emirates will claim they pay the same for fuel as everyone else does…. which is actually quite true! The difference is, the hub in Dubai has fuel at basically half the cost of the North American counterparts. But in theory, DL and UA and whoever else comes to Dubai, pays that same low price as well. Emirates just gets that price more often as a larger percentage of their whole fuel bill being based here.
There is a runway closure scheduled for this summer. They've reduced the flying 15% to accommodate the closure. You do the math!!!!
Each and every night in Dubai we have an arrival bank at around midnight with probably 30 plus flights coming within a few hours or less of each other… not including all the other airlines coming into the place at around the same time. We hold every night for 20 minutes at least and then when out of the hold, get some pretty big long vectors before doing the approach. Each night, dispatch adds thousands of pounds of fuel to each flight during this period and has our most distant alternate planned fuel-wise. We have another complex at 6 am with the same issues….
It seems no one at Emirates wants to make the call on needing more reductions in schedule to fit into the rwy closure operations. This place will become a gridlock not unlike the BQE at 5pm on a Friday night!!!!
Be interesting to see what happens.

Also, for the same dates Emirates has an airfare of 1030 Dirhams and Qatar Airways is offering the same route for 1025 Dirhams. Both prices are basically equal and this is about $282 US dollars. It seems United is undercutting both Emirates and Qatar from Dubai to Doha.
