Interesting story regarding that aircraft. It flew to ORD empty, except for a few VIPs including the President of Poland and the President of LOT. The next day was supposed to be the LOT inaugural 787 flight. They built a big display area in Terminal 5 with a bunch of polish aviation history. Unfortunately, the plane was grounded once it landed at ORD.

It's the "two" guarantees that you have. The airplane has two separate batteries.

It also has SIX engine and APU driven generators.

So one battery provides enough emergency power? In every jet I've flown you need all the batteries online to really get any sufficient amount of flight time on battery power only. Enough to reasonably expect to make it to the nearest suitable.

I know of at least a dozen garage/house fires as a result of this technology being abused. I also have some experience with faulty cells and Lithium fires. Very hot fire and no way to put it out. Not a good thing on an airplane.

My dad is a model train nut (and a retired NWA pilot). He tells me it's common knowledge with him and his group of fellow train nuts to not use Li Ion batteries, but that if you do to treat them as described above.

I think that's why the 787 has SIX engine/APU generators (two each). I think the RAT can also produce electric power, unlike the 757/767.

Larry beat me to it, but how about a RAT? Nope, lets put 98 kg of batteries currently designated as prohibited HazMat on passenger airplanes. Pure genius...
