My point is, salaries should have doubled by now. .. . .
I believe we should use this data to rally support for huge pay increases. . . . . This is what has to happen. . . . .
1. Get as many major contracts as possible to become amendable on the same date. 2012 would be good timing. This has to be the only part of the negotiations that is not negotiable.

2. Decide, on a national level, on one contract. There should be regional differences in pay and differentials for aircraft size etc...
Your own union can always negotiate for more, just not less . . . . and I think those pay rates could easily be Delta 2001. Why not, if you level the playing field on pay, all carriers will have to pay at least the new amount.
Then, in order to get applicants at their airline, they can offer superior work rules, and/or additional pay and benefits.
As a certain management type at my airline is so fond of saying . . . "Win! Win!".

Salary reduction with regards to inflation is not a phenomina that is limited to aviation. On a cycling fourm that I'm active in many of the shop owners, employees, and other posters are lamenting the same facts. We're getting paid less, and our expenses keep going up for basic nessessities.

Crazy
Analysts have mentioned that we are about to enter a time of acquisitions and mergers in the airlines. The legacies most likely will be reduced into two big companies. A few smaller ones might get sucked in as well. The results are that there will be a larger market share for the LCC and even fewer good pilot jobs.
And people like to say that Skyhigh is the crazy one.

Great post, Mike, and that part is right on . . . .
This part, I believe, would be better served not by a National Seniority List, but instead by a minimum pay per hour in each aircraft type . . . . that means, you still have your own in-house union, and in-house seniority (one thing at a time!) but after a certain day, NO ONE WILL WORK IN THAT TYPE OF AIRPLANE FOR LESS THAN THE GUILD SCALE.

With this thought of a national pay scale, how far would the industry be from being a regulated one again should the other "national" ideas take hold? (seniority lists, etc.)

Predictions
The results will be thousands of pilots hitting the streets and a broadening LCC market.

Don't think the US Gov't or Japan will allow that to happen as something like 75+% of all trans-pac seats will be controlled by one company with 5th freedom rights....as a NWA pilot I'd like that, but don't think that will happen...now CAL/NWA or DAL/NWA or AAA/NWA...that may make sense...

I just watched a news program tonight that mentioned that very scenario. If USAir gets DAL then UAL will be gunning for a partner of similar stature.
