US Airways Calls
#3561
Thanks! That's what I was thinking but then again I can understand not wanting to go through the PITA to deal with the website if Airways is imminently going to halt interviewing. Those applying in this window still won't get called until they close out the May window. I was asked if they'd even get to the current open window and my answer was ???

I'm also in the pool at DL. So I have a decision to make. Lucky me I've been told, but its a tough choice. I live an hr away from CLT,which would be great! But no guarantee CLT with remain a hub down the road. Anyone care to speculate on future of CLT? Also, how long before a new hire in class today expect to hold CLT? Pro & Cons DL vs US ( besides the obvious)?

CLT is the second largest hub behind DFW. It was the number 1 profit center for the former US Airways.
If it isn't a hub then neither will there be an airline to work for.
If you don't get it right out of the gate then probably 6 months or so.

As for Delta vs here...obviously, some pros and cons to both. My main concern here is this SLI (and the last SLI for that matter). Not for for my own sake as a new hire, but rather that this could be an ugly few years. I hope I'm wrong, but I'm keeping my options open just in case. Also, though I'm new to this industry, from reading on here it seems like our and American's contract is very weak compared to Delta. The guys around here have been kicked in the junk for so long that they don't really seem to think that it will improve (just my anecdotal impression). Though people will tell you that first year pay shouldn't be a factor, it makes a difference and is much higher at Delta.
On a positive side, I will say that the training has been great? Hotels provided, full pay, per diem, positive space home on days off, great instruction, and great people to work with. What we'd call a gentleman's course in the Air Force.
You can find lots of speculation on CLT's future on this forum and elsewhere. I have no opinion on that. To me, life would be awesome if I lived near CLT working here. I just have no desire to live there or in any of our domiciles, so I'll always commute.
It looks like the Wait for class is long a Delta, so you probably ought to just take the US Airways class. You'd still have the option to bail to your Delta class in the future.

Congratulations on your two offers. I am sure you are trying to weight your options wisely. I personally encourage you to favor newAmerican. The proposed international growth and attrition is amazing.
To your question, CLT will continue to grow in ATLs shadow. The airport has extremely low operating costs that will drive the continuous expansion. ie. The CLT airport is continuously buying all adjacent property.

My all time favorite airport in the world is ATL. The airport is extremely well planned and efficient. If only more airports were like ATL and I believe Charlotte is trying. I think they'll be successful in growing, but this depends on if CLT can keep their emplanement fees as extremely competitive as they are.
What do we know?
By takeoffs and landings ATL is the #1 busiest airport in the world and CLT is #6. CLT was #11 in 2006, so the airline is adding flights, but passenger emplanements were 95,462,867 vs 41,228,372 in ATL and CLT respectively.
So what is Charlotte doing to drive growth?
There is so much construction/growth coming to CLT that area politicians are starting to fight over control of the airport again!

So what is Charlotte doing to drive growth?
- The airport authority is continuously buying massive amounts of land on all sides of the airport to grow it's footprint.
- Adding a 4th Parallel Runway 12,000" long between 36L & 36C. (Construction to begin 2014—For a350 orders?)
- Adding a 5th Parallel Runway on the West side of Highway 485. (Jerry Orr, with Construction TDB)
- Building a Freestanding International Terminal (Connected by Tram?)
- Expanded Entrance/Main Terminal
- Expanding Concourse B, C, & E
- Removing 5/23 for a tram and additional terminals (Construction TBD)
- Jerry Orr: "up to 4 parallel terminals" Expansion of B & C terminals may conflict with "up to 4 parallel terminals" statement. (Construction TBD)
- Addition of People Moving Tram (Underground?)
- Building a ATL style New Control Tower
- New highway off-ramps without will lead traffic to airport without stop lights
- 8 lane dedicated entrance road
- Statue of Lady Charlotte to be moved into the Main Terminal
- New Parking Decks (Currently Under Construction)
- New Car Rental Center and Food Courts are also planned.
“You either grow, or risk withering away,” said Jerry Orr, the airport’s aviation director since 1989. He said he believes Charlotte’s airport could one day be bigger than Atlanta’s.

"Directly across from Orr’s desk stands a photo of the airport, nearly as big as the wall. Orr uses a laser pointer to show how he plans to move infrastructure around like chess pieces.
“So after we build this (fourth parallel) runway, we’d close this one,” he says, pointing to the diagonal runway, “and build another one over here. Then we’d have a footprint exactly like Atlanta, same size, same footprint.
“Once you close that, you can extend that concourse all the way across there and have 50 gates on one concourse, take these two concourses out, put a people mover in between,” he says, showing how he would demolish parts of existing concourses and build two concourses parallel to the terminal.
“Then there’s room in here to build another one of those, and another one,” he said, making four parallel concourses connected by a tram."
