Hypothetically, if someone got hired by SWA and USAir, what would be a better company to work, taking into all the standard important factors (pay, upgrade, etc.) and the stability/future of each company. Oh ya, and you wanted to live on the West coast as well.

The only thing that wasn't covered ad nauseum in that topic was the domicile consideration you bring up. Right now, the new AA has only two bases proximate to the West Coast. The US base in PHX and the AA base in LAX. LAX is moderately senior for AA and a new hire would likely be in MIA or NYC for a while before LAX would even become an option. The US PHX base is currently not available to new hires due to the seniority dispute, though this will be resolved eventually. So a person on the West Coast hired today would be looking at a transcontinental commute for a while before access to even a "middle-of-the-country" base like ORD or DFW might be a realistic possibility.
Southwest, on the other hand, has a base in OAK that is routinely offered to new hires, and sizable bases in PHX and LAS that would be reasonably accessible relatively soon for a new hire.
Get hired at one, the other, or both, then confront the issue. Until an offer is in hand, you don't REALLY have a decision to make. Apply everywhere, interview everywhere, and decide when you have to. It costs nothing but time to apply (OK, some websites require a fee), and even an unsuccessful interview is good practice for the future.

There is a lengthy thread on this very topic in this forum.

That's funny... I interviewed at both companies the same week in December '11. However, only Airways offered me a job.

Just wanted to pass on that post-merger I witnessed interviews still taking place in the Charlotte traninig center this AM...4/day. It doesn't look like it's stopping anytime soon contrary to the rumors it may during the merger.

I actually heard that people weren't showing up their interviews at all. A guy I know said the guy he was interviewing with in the morning session just didn't show. Anyone else heard this? Heck, I could be there to fill in within an hour's notice. Just might throw that on the ol résumé.
