Default Pay On Different Equipment

What's the story behind some of Delta's pay rates? The Short Bus or Small Bus, (or whatever you call it) pays a bigger difference from the 737 than the 757/767. Then you have the 767-400 paying a fair amount better than the 767-300. I know I'm not conveying my confusion very well. I guess I'm wondering why the A319/A320 doesn't pay about the same as the B737. Then maybe the 737-900 and B757 should pay about the same. Next pay all the 767s about the same. I know I'm starting to get into paybanding. If you don't like the way I just sliced it up, at least pay the 757/767 guys more than 5% better than the 737.

If you were based in LAX, SLC, NYC or ATL, except for the vast different in flying between the 737 and the ER, would there be any real incentive to choose one category over another?

I'm honestly surprised the pay rates weren't banded a bit better on the TA- but it's more a contract extension than anything.

Some of it was obvious ego stuff from the JPWA in having similar north aircraft pay less (or larger aircraft pay the same as smaller)- I wish we would move on from that.

I assume it was not something that the majority wanted, no the company wanted to deal with.

May hurt us in a SLI with a 73N operator, but help us if we merger with a ER/330 operator.

Actually, A LGB pay system might help with an all 737 carrier that has one major base located in a somewhat remote section of the country. You COULD make the argument for DOH integration with someone like that because there would be no incentive to commute halfway across the country to fly the 777 when you can drive to work and keep doing what you have been doing for the same coin.

Discuss amongst yourselves..

That carrier has commuters from all over the country. I know many in TA, GA and FL that would move bases in an instant. Currently some are commuting to ANC for a left seat. Do not be so sure of all of them living close to their bases.

Heck we have SEA pilots commuting to ATL for a left seat.

Actually, it will "hurt" you when you park your 75's and replace them with 737-7/8/9's.. The pay difference is between the those airplanes is $5.25 (12th yr 73-9 vs. 75 FO as of 1 Jan 2013) and it's even worse for the 73-7/8 ($5.98).

So knowing that the mission of the 75's will be replaced by a different, yet more capable airframe- why would DALPA & ALPA National have allowed this lower payscale?

When 2015 rolls around, those 75's left will be paying $154.50 while your 73-9 will pay $148.93. Southwest currently pays $151.

While I realize that payscales are just one part of a contract, and that there are also many other compensation factors to add into.. there is no denying that the 737NG's are a 757 replacement.

Oh do tell.

I've never seen a 737 that could hold a candle to a 757 - not even close.

except maybe FMS computation and the HUD.

Yes, the replacements will play less, and DAL sees the 739 replacing 80% of the 757 routes.

If there is an SLI between now and then with a carrier like ALK, they have a few 739's we will have 100+ 739's and 140 or so 757's; down from about 180 today. The fact that the pay is not banded may hurt your W-2 today, but it may give you seniority tomorrow.

No one will argue that point. But lets live in the real world. The 757 is no longer produced. Boeing, in their infinite wisdom.. has decided that the 73 will be their be all airplane.
The 737-9er is a direct 757 replacement for transcon and long range domestic flying.
The 737Max will be an even better plane with regards to performance, technology and passenger comfort.

So.. going back to the original point. DALPA allowed for the replacement aircraft to pay less.
ACL makes the point that the reason for this is Merger Protection in case Delta and Alaska merge. Oh well~
