Alaska To Let Customers Print Baggage Tags
Well, I can just see it now - bags going in the opposite direction as the owner. I know it's going to happen to me who can't tell MCI from MCO.
From Tacoma News Tribune:
Alaska Airlines President Brad Tilden told analysts this week the SeaTac-based airline will experiment this year with customer-printed baggage routing tags.
Those tags, which could be printed either at an airport kiosk or possibly at home, would save another step for the airline and its customers at check-in.
The practice has been adopted by some airlines in Europe. American Airlines is experimenting with the new procedure in Austin, Texas.
Alaska was a pioneer in the now-common practice of passengers printing their own boarding passes, but baggage tags have been a different story for airlines.
Because scanners read the baggage tags to route the luggage to the correct flight, the tags must be printed clearly and applied properly. The tags also must be secured so that they don’t fall off the bag during the baggage sorting and handling process.
Tilden gave no specifics about when and where the bag tag program would be initiated.

Why is this such a big deal? Cruise lines have been doing this for awhile. They last cruise I took in the fall I printed out the luggage tags with all the information on it and placed them on the bags. Granted I did make sure to "laminate" them with clear packing tape before I secured them to the luggage so they wouldn't come off easily.
