For the OP, the go-around/missed is a normal procedure but actually rarely happens on the line. I can't remember the last time I did one, last year maybe in SLC due to preceding A/C still on the runway as we cross the approach lights or whatever was towers trigger point.

Is there still a Canarsie visual at JFK? Strobe light poles in the folkes' back yards... I forget which runway, but there was always a lot of wind.

Yep, not called the canarsie visual anymore, but there is a published visual to 13 L/R

LGA, DCA and SAN make the job fun.

Another arrival into LGA, but this was yesterday evening, 9/11. In crystal clear air, city lights sparkled like jewels. Looking north up the avenues, one-way traffic etched crimson and white lines in the darkness. Times Square blared like hot phosphorus. Freedom Tower, glowing red, white and blue, was veiled in a transparent laser column shooting straight toward the heavens. From 3000 feet airborne, New York looked clean, orderly, polished. The solemn night showed a new day...

Years ago, back in the 70s, there used to be a very unofficial late night arrival to 31 at LGA. Went under various names; Fay Ray approach, King Kong II arrival and a host of other names referenced to the Empire State building.

Basically it was over the building or abeam, at 10t feet and barber pole, with a circle to 31. I did it several times as a F/O and watched several different Captains do it. I never heard of anything but a 727 do the approach as those boards were extremely effective.

The goal was to do a normal circling maneuver east of Shea Stadium. Power up between 500-1,000 feet.

It would knock off 5-10 minutes of flight time. Only seen it for the last flight of the night, never earlier than 2300-2400, and obviously good weather.

B-99 visual to 36. Tower (female) - XXX, you've got an Eastern 727 with 30 knts of overtake behind you. Can you keep it up as long as possible?
Me - "no complaints yet ma'am".
Captain - "Oh, you didn't..."

MD-80 visual to 36. Tight spacing behind a squadron mate flying for another airline. TWR puts a King Air into position "be ready for an immediate". FO and I are thinking "this will never work." "Start S turning for spacing please." Okay....

Jerry clears. King Air cleared for takeoff. Oh, we'll be going around. It's gonna happen. "King Air abort and exit ASAP." Nah, we're still going to have to go around. TWR - "can you circle to 33?" Sure. Fun stuff doing a last minute switch to 33 in front of a squadron mate.

DCA, SNA, and LGA. Best domestic fun for airline pilots.

Ahhh, the memories I used to fly those Pan Am Express/ Trans World Express Dash 7's in there.....using 3D RNAV visual approaches down the Anacosta River, land on 15 and hold short of 19.....

Now landing on 19, I try to blow the peoples hats off their heads in the park on short final hahah...(only joking of course)

No, didn't mean to sleight you there Slice'. We really appreciated the Dash 7s, and DCA like no other place exploited their capabilities. I learned from jumpseating that those STOL landings weren't quite as easy as they looked. I remember when the mains touched both guys started throwing levers on the quadrant like they were herding cats.

One time we primed a Ransom Dash to show us his best landing: he used less than 700'.

Dick Henson and Dawson Ransom both were frequent visitors to the tower.

I seem to recall we had only four female controllers in the Beech 99 days, and three of them usually attend the reunions, so I'll pass your story around!

I flew for Henson from 83 to 87, Be 99, Shorts and Dash8. I loved flying into DCA, especially when we did BWI to DCA. ake off on 22, land on 21, 7 minutes in the air. The controllers enjoyed it as much as we did. When I went to AWA I was happy when we started service to DCA. I still like the challenge of managing the slam dunks. In the Bus flaps 2, gear and boards will sink you like a rock but you can't go faster than 190 kts. The 757 would do the same at flaps 5 and the same gear and speedbrake configuration.

My first time into DCA as a passenger was at night. I was looking outside, trying to orient myself and I saw we were about to pass over an airport. "I wonder which field that is...?" I mused. Then...down goes the wing, out comes all the drag and..."Holy ****, we're trying to MAKE that???" It was a valiant effort, but we went around. Sounds like a fun field.
