Delta Ponders Pilot Sources

So, get off the mailman thing. The same basic qualifications that a mailman needs to get hired matches what a new hire ATC dude/dudette needs.
I never lived in a crash pad (even in my airline days). I've owned lots of cool cars (still do... newest one, 2011 Infiniti G37 convertible hardtop), bought many houses and STILL GOT TO JUMPSEAT ON AIRLINES.
I'll bet your post office guy can't compare.

Yes ATC is huge !! I have a pilot friend who married someone who works for ATC. He quit his job to stay at home with the kids because his airline job did not hold a candle to his wifes ATC gig. Now they both drive new BMW's though his has a few car seats in back.

It use to be that mailmen and firefighters comprised the lower rungs of or society. Not anymore. To be fair though I don't know if government jobs have gotten better or that private jobs have become so bad that working for the government seems like a better deal now.

We will see
Government jobs aren't secure like they used to be in this cost-cutting environment...look at teachers employed by the state across the country, or the Air Force conducting a Reduction In Force (RIF) eliminating 7,500 officers, or 10% of it's officer corps. The pendulum is swinging back to the private sector as Congress and the next President in 2012 focuses on deficit reduction.
I share your hopes for a reduction in the compensation packages that government workers get however it does not mean that the private sector will get raises. Both careers will then be in the dumpster ratcheting downward more every day.

ATC has had "regional" partners since just after the strike in 1981. The "scope" was all the lowest level ATC towers, like B.F.E., Nebraska, would be staffed with outsourced companies that pay no benefits, use low wages, etc.
Naturally, the agency wanted to expand this to virtually all towers short of LAX, ORD, and ATL, etc. Sound familiar?
The same game is played wherever they can get away with it. So, just like a major airline pilot job, it can get contracted away. And this government CAN go bankrupt.
