Nobody has a crystal ball... so take this FWIW. But if I only had a couple of years seniority and/or was a lot younger, I would leave for SWA. Their average F/O makes what I make as a DC-9 Captain!

I wouldn't. I honestly think DAL is the place to be going forward. We will return back to the top of the pile where we have traditionally been, and where we were for the bulk of your and my career so far.

One of many cases in point, the youngest guy in my dad's newhire class at Southern left for National in 1973. Had he stayed, he would still be #2 here (#1 amongst fnw types). Instead, by way of the Pan Am acquisition, he is bidding with the 1986 hires at DL.

Also, another possible variable that could account for some of the training failures is the DC-9... Delta didn't have those in 07-08. It's not easy going from flying glass for years to flying steam gauges on a DC-9. And I think it would especially not be easy if most of your flying experience is on glass. Having said that, I have flown with several of the recent new hires and they have all done a great job.

Historically, those sidestepping to another higher paying major carrier are the ones that really get hosed in their careers.

I left TWA (long before the AA acquisition) to come to Delta. I had 8 years of seniority when I left. Had I stayed, I would have been stapled to the bottom of AA's list, furloughed for something like 5 years after 9/11, and would likely reach age 65 before ever having enough seniority to fly Captain at AA. So coming to Delta (for me) was a MUCH better move than had I stayed at TWA. And like I said... nobody has a crystal ball. I just made the best decision I could with the information I had at the time... and fortunately, it turned out to be the better of the two alternatives in this case. I definitely wish I had gone to SWA instead... but it's too late for me now.
