"Can we at least talk? That would make other company's CEOs think I'm hotter"

If it's with AA, then it should help push along the US-DAL slot swap.

Or if the slot swap is going to happen on its own anyway, then we would have a USAir with a significantly reduced NYC and BOS presence. Perfect for an AA or JB merger (or even 3 way). And don't forget SWA. The largest domestic carrier with a paultry presence in the largest domestic market. The slot swap will almost definately grant them even more forced divesture charity but they will still be minor players in the largest and most important domestic market and no one will give them the slots they truly need there to continue to grow. Another merger may be their only option.

what does usair have to offer? some slots in lga, dca, the shuttle, phl hub, clt hub, phx hub...dl has a shuttle and a hub near clt/phl....ua has a hub near phx/phl....aa has a hub near phl/clt...besides the shuttles...thanks to the tsa & gacela are nowdays worth just pennies on the dollar...besides ua and dl are still tied up with recent mergers and aa has no money

Doug is desperate. Doug needs to cash out before the next down turn or his window of opportunity is gone.

So, what can he do? Sell to DAL or UCAL. Unlikely. AMR? Also unlikely if one takes into account their $$$ situation. Perhaps a deal with JBlue or Redwood, but even more likely is this:

The Rip-a-Stitch. He could take that seam between East and West and rip it out. He then could sell the west side as a whole and then work on the east on a hub by hub basis. To the purchasers, they would get what they need without the whole enchilada. They most importantly would avoid the nasty, toxic, industrial mess that is the lingering battle of seniority and USAPA's twisted way of trying to force it that has left permanent fissures in that group.

5 minutes after any potential merger is announced the employees at whatever airline is involved would invoke nuclear war and taint the well so badly as to effectively ruin any proposed deal. Any CEO who presses ahead regardless will see his airline go into complete meltdown mode pronto. There are plenty of UAL, CAL, AA, etc... pilots on this board. Am I wrong?

To think that any pilot group could 'meltdown' an airline is ignorant and self centered. Labor relations are a factor in merger negotiations, but only a small piece of the transaction. Get over yourself and understand that the architects of these deals don't really care whether the pilot groups (or any of the much larger labor groups for that matter) can get along or not.
