I have a question for the pro union guys. What happens if we vote in a union and our union negotiates a worse deal then we already have? Essentially we would be starting from nothing and throwing away our current PEAs, correct. Just posing a question that a fellow crew member brought up to me a couple weeks back.

The CBA would override the PEA. If we negotiated away premium pay (for example) all would lose it. Under the current plan you would have to sign a new PEA for any changes.

So essentially we would start from our PEAs and negotiate from there, fair enough. Has anyone on this board actually been through this process ( going from non union to union) and would they care to comment.

One would hope the negotiating committee wouldn't even send that to a vote, but I've seen it happen first hand at the regional level....

You could come out with a worse deal if 50%+1 vote that way, but you would have:
1. The ability to get better healthcare than that crap the company is about to hand down to us,
2. Better legal representation,
3. Better aeromedical assistance,
4. A right to negotiate vice be given whatever the company decides after preteneding to "collaborate" with you,
5. The knowledge that you are now part of the process that determines industry wages and benefits instead of simply riding the coat tails.
How's that for starters?

This industry is rapidly changing once again. Mega mergers, mega retirements, growth, etc are finally happening and that's a good thing. With everything going on in this industry we are fools to not have a union/cba on property. I'll be the first to admit that when I came here I wasn't interested in hearing about it. But now, I believe that for our own well being and protections, we are leaving ourself out on a limb without one. I'm not saying we need this to try and screw JB, or show them who's in charge, etc. We need it to protect our careers and future against what ever comes down the line. If we want this next drive to be successful, then we must pick and choose carefully who the reps are. We don't need the radicals and extremists pushing this thing. That's one of the reasons I was so turned off by it last year and through conversations with my fellow pilots that was their concern also. I don't want to hear we need a union so we can screw JB and how it's time to get back at the company for past doings, etc. I want to hear how to protect and enhance our careers/benefits for the future. The union can only be as strong as the pilots it represents. We need to set the standard for our expectations, not the union. Their job is to represent us and enforce our CBA. We need to be educated about the facts of what we have/don't have as well as the risks of not having these protections.

I feel the same way. I would prefer a CBA over my PEA and would like to work in an atmosphere of respect including respect for the company to acheive it.
