Couldn't have said it better myself.
Especially the "lead" part. I'd love to see some leadership at ALPA, rather than a junta of self-preserving bureaucrats set on following the politically expedient path of least resistance in an effort to keep their lucrative fiefdoms intact.

See Carl, many issues cannot be decided by politics because 100,000 lives are directly affected by what the MEC decides. That does not mean small bites to make sure you never get fat, but it means that you don't errantly waive your gun because it makes you feel good. It means that even if you politically would vote one way, that responsibility to whom your represent goes beyond your personal politics when you see a real issue. Like it, love it, or hate it, that is what leading means to me.

And concerning the pensions, laughable to think anyone here would even entertain that. As I recall (before your time) there was a vocal group wanting to get the pensions in our own names, like AMR.
DALPA rejected that idea in the late 90's/early 2000 time frame. Why? Their reason was that the pensions were overfunded and the need to protect was nil. The claim was there was a greater risk in having the pension in our own names than having Delta administer it.

The fact is that this was a strategic blunder of monumental proportion, from an entity that consistently boasts of its strategic and forward thinking. That's the point. Your performance has to match your hype...or people will notice. At Delta, 5500 pilots have noticed.

Typical deflection and political non-response. TheManager's point is quite clear and you ignore it. DALPA rejected the idea of placing the pension in the names of pilots. Another ALPA union NWA rejected a similar plan. That decision at DALPA cost Delta pilots BILLIONS of dollars that are unrecoverable. But your point of trying to blame the membership for it by saying "Apparently not a majority" agreed is interesting. Where was the MEMRAT vote on the question of securing the pension in each pilot's individual name? What was the vote percentage?

It was a different committee chair then. He held things close. The 2 guys since have IMO, done a better job given the circumstances.
I did not understand how the union worked then...I still only have a cloudy view. However, with the benefit of hindsight only, don't we all wish the pension was in our names?
Strategic blunder, absolutely. Different time, absolutely. Not the fault of the current DALPA reps though. Shoulda, coulda, woulda.
Now, we have disparate pension obligations. There should be some way to rectify those today. Not trying to stir any N vs S stuff up, but there are significant differences and inequities going forward.

Carl, you really need to get your head out of your rectum. The last couple months you've gotten worse. Your attacks do nothing but alienate you from the masses. Were you beaten up as a child? Does being a cyber bully make you feel better? Maybe you should've gotten a chance at the shrinks chair. Maybe then you could've expressed your feelings of anger and disappointment. Get off of ACL's back. I was there and watched all the crap go down at the recall. You would be singing a different tune if you were there too. Why? Because then you could've sat 10 feet from ACL and heard everything that was said. Then ACL could've come back to you shaking his head in frustration and explained to you what was really going on. I learned a lot that day. Made me respect ACL even more. You on the other hand have lost mine. I've agreed and disagreed with you in the past. Now your just a ranting childish bully grasping at straws.

hoser, I think you're overdoing it with Carl. I completely understand Carl's frustration with ACL. When ACL ran for rep the first time, I spent a lot of time getting to know his positions on the issues and I strongly supported him. The second time he ran, I would not even remotely consider voting for him. Why? Because of exactly the kind of stuff Carl is talking about. IMO, ACL is a typical politician type who's position on an issue is whichever way the wind is blowing at the time. Sorry, but I call it the way I see it.
But why does Carl have to be such a jerk? Even Purple is nice now and people listen. I guess I'm just sick of him coming on here and being so rude. It does nothing to help his message. As far as ACL, you live near him now. Invite him over and have a chat. I'll have to disagree with you on the ACL recall issue. I sat behind him. If I wasn't there to listen to his comments and watch and hear the whole MEC I probably would agree with you.

Anyway, Carl is perfectly capable of defending himself and doesn't need me. As for ACL, I was done with him long before this recall issue. I'm a big believer in being straight forward with people and letting the chips fall where they may. I have no use for politicians.
