As a rational and practical thinker I totally disagree with your statement. If pilots were happy with their situation and lot in life there would be no discord what so ever. If you had said most DL pilots feel they had been screwed and ALPA was the reason, I would still disagree with that statement but at least it would have made sense. Only DAL88 or his equivalent Purple would make sense out of what you said.
I have flown with 2 777 capts that were each below 50 when their pensions were terminated. They couldn't take a lump sum, they were too young so, they didn't have that choice. They each got what roughly any other 48 year old got in their claim and note despite each having 25 years of service then. They weren't cared for by ALPA or the pbgc due to their ages. Lee Moak, who was older, but with less service got more money. FOs who were older with less service got more PBGC and in some cases more claim and note money.
They are young and senior, but they got bent over. It doesn't matter if they can make it up...That is not the point.

Finis,
Yours is a good post.
You have to add to your considerations the tailwinds the DPA recieved from many Delta pilots who have been displaced post - merger and who's careers have moved backwards since 2008. Ironically, many of these pilots joined with their Northwest brothers in the "I got screwed" crowd, although ironically the remedy for each is the destruction of the other.

This is exactly why the DPA is even around. ALPA will tell you that it is a bunch of guys mad because they were screwed, but that's not the reason and until ALPA acknowledges this the DPA will continue to haunt them.

Let me help you out Finis.

I suppose the 49-year-old (in 2005) 777 captain (who was probably a 35-year-old narrowbody captain and 40-year old 767 captain) is just going to have to find a way to deal with the purgatory that is DAL, as he spends 16+ years in the left seat of the highest paying aircraft on the property.
I might pick a different example for the legitimacy of DPA support than that one. Considering we had thousands of guys furloughed for up to 5+ years, there are plenty of worthy ones out there.

Hey, I don't doubt your experience with it. All I can tell you is that I'm in a very large category, have flown with A LOT of pilots who support DPA, and I have yet to run into a single one who has said even one word about getting "f'ed" in the SLI and wanting to revisit that. To a man/woman, every DPA supporter I've run across is dissatisfied with ALPA in terms of their ability/plan to appropriately represent us and get our profession and our careers back on track.

So from your sample set of "two" you deduce that DPA is all about revisiting the SLI?
