Retirement at age 70

The FAA only has jurisdiction over domestic flights. ICAO rules need to change. And they won't due to high incapacitation rates in some groups flying under current rules which exceed the ICAO maximum acceptable incapacitation rate.
As far as the big 3 parking planes, that's extremely unlikely. One can speculate on the matter, but it's even less likely that the earth will burn to a crisp due to CAGW.

You're right that the widebodies would need matching IACO rules. But ICAO is not immune to economic or political pressures either, and the shortage is going to hit harder and sooner overseas. EK parked a bunch of planes recently, which they tried to pretend was not due to pilot attrition.

Without any real scientific studies proving flying past 65 is dangerous, it's purely age discrimination to require someone to retire who is still able to pass a 1st class medical. You can't even get your full SS benefits at 65. The rule needs to change so that you can fly as long as you can pass a medical.
I would be in favor of more stringent medical evaluations at a certain age. We all are going to age differently. Some of us are going to be washed up at 55 and other 75. An arbitrary age with no evidence of ineptitude is unjust.

How about having to be 17 to earn your PPL and 18 for your CPL?
Are those ages also arbitrary unjust?

Just so you know, the rate of epilepsy increases parabolically once one reaches their mid-60s. And epilepsy is a disqualifying medical condition for a pilot's license.
And to respond to Rickair's assertion that the legacies will be pushing for increased retirement age - very doubtful. The expense of pilots on the long term disabled list would cost more than just setting up ab initio programs.
We're all just widgets. Widgets with an expiration date due to the fact that when we reach a certain age, safety margins are eroded too much.

Ding ding ding. Ab-Initio will be the solution and it’s not even that expensive on an industrial scale. Buy a bunch of light twins, give the students jobs as instructors and then farm them out to 135 ops or regionals for 2 years and you’re set once the pipeline reaches maturity. For the 2 years it takes to get that running you just pay bonuses or whatever. There won’t ever be a pilot shortage in the US as long as the pay is good. The reason the regionals had trouble was the 18 grand a year salary. I don’t see any regionals parking aircraft now that they pay 50 g’s to show up.
