Hi!
"What I've heard is that only ABBI accredited four year institutions will be allowed to credit academic time towards the 1500 hours. Since the senate originally wanted 800 hours, I wouldn't be surprised if the FAA allowed 700 hours to be substituted for that four year degree."
I think that Senators would be shocked if this happens. If they had wanted 800 hours, they would have left their bill as-is, and forced the House to come down to 800 hours. They agreed to the ATP/1500 hour change for a reason.
Right now, the 250 hour rule for Commercial, can be reduced to about 188 hours, a 62 hour reduction.

That proposal is what was proposed by Embry Riddle and their lobbyists as a way to keep their revenue stream going. Why it was supported by ALPA is anyones guess. Everyone else, from the other unions, to Congress and the Colgan families wanted the 1500 hour rule. (The Senate had droped the hours only because Chuck Schumer, who had proposed the legislation, wanted 1500 hours, but could not get the support in the Senate..go figure)
Anyway, the Colgan families were REALLY ripped about the ABBI/Riddle/ALPA proposal. It wasn't until everyone else testified in favor of the 1500 hours did ALPA grudgingly go along.

Thats a given, but i only hope the industry doesnt crumble before then.
Lets face it, terrible economy, training on a downward spiral, euro airlines opening cadet programs....FAA possibly losing funding. This bill came at a bad time
And while many can argue the good and bad parts of it, no one can hide the pilot shortage coming. And anyone who is stupid enough to say there isnt gonna be one needs to open their eyes. I was just at ATP in florida, their student enrollment has dropped astronomically since 08' and continues to go down.
Personal opinion...
The FAA will lighten these requirements through a loop-hole that congress provided them with in the clause that says:
(d) Credit Toward Flight Hours- The Administrator may allow specific academic training courses, beyond those required under subsection (b)(2), to be credited toward the total flight hours required under subsection (c). The Administrator may allow such credit based on a determination by the Administrator that allowing a pilot to take specific academic training courses will enhance safety more than requiring the pilot to fully comply with the flight hours requirement.
Big schools like ATP Riddle MTSU ect... will be able to enact courses in their training to lower these standards. My guess is in 3 years you will see 700-800 hour guys getting hired. Just my 2cents though.

Considering the families of the Colgan crash managed to get an act of Congress passed, methink the FAA skimping out in the rule-making process will go over like a fart in a spacesuit. They won't stop until they get this done right. Thank goodness.

If I had a dollar for each newbie who asked this....
How about reading any one of the three threads on this subject since the question has been answered several times in each.
Or better yet, read the bill (now law) yourself
Read The Bill: H.R. 5900 - GovTrack.us
Seems to me anyone unwilling to do a little research is probably unwilling to work hard enough to get an ATP.
