US airways-Delta Merger?

And try this on for size when considering a merger, aquisition, or whatever with Delta. Delta will always be the surviving certificate. Why? No unions, except Alpa and dispatchers. The unions would have to go through the whole certification process again. Might pass, might not. But it would be an effort. Word from the DAL CEO just two weeks ago in a public forum of pilots, that there, were no, have been no, not even on the radar, talks of any sort of merger/aquisition. Looks like its a done deal then.

Union contracts are all valid after a merger even if it is with a non-union group.

US Airways tested Delta's interest in merger: WSJ
Sat Jul 29, 2006 12:00pm ET
Business News
CHICAGO (Reuters) - US Airways Group Inc.'s CEO this summer to gauge his interest in a possible merger, the Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday, citing people familiar with the situation.
Delta CEO Gerald Grinstein told his counterpart at US Airways, Doug Parker, that Delta wasn't interest in starting merger talks because the Atlanta-based airline plans to exit bankruptcy-court protection next spring as a stand-alone carrier, the Journal reported. Delta did not immediately return a call seeking comment.
A US Airways representative could not immediately be reached. The newspaper said that no subsequent discussions have occurred between the two airlines. The Journal said a Delta spokeswoman would not confirm or deny the conversation between Parker and Grinstein.
Thank You Grinstein !!! No Offense to any Delta types ... Parker's ego has been writing checks that common sense can't cash !!!

The same thing happened during the PanAm aquisition. That was a little different though- as I recall, Delta had them go through the hiring process.
Maybe some prior WAL guys could add to this.

I'm sure in hindsight that wasn't the shrewdest of moves.
