Default AA emergency landing last night...

"Smith said the McDonald Douglas MD-82 left LaGuardia just after 1 p.m., en route to Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport. But five minutes into the flight, at an altitude of about 2,000 feet, the left engine failed, Smith said. The crew declared an emergency, then landed at Newark, he said."

Interesting that the failure happened five minutes into the flight... And that it took five minutes to reach 2K feet? Is that normal?

LGA initial cllimbs are usually to 5000, and a heavy "80 series" will climb at about 2500-3500 fpm (below 10k), but if you lose one motor and are heavy it will only climb at about 200-600 fpm.

Good job by the crew.

Keep in mind that this is a report from a newspaper. Some "experts" report.

Yep, as long as it's pointing downhill.
