What are the downsides to 1,500 hours? What will the 2nd and 3rd order effects be? Don't get me wrong - I'm happy to see this happen, but I'm just curious if it will make it harder for the regionals to find pilots. Instead of hiring 1,500 hour American pilots, will foreign owned regional airlines be able to transplant their pilots who will happily work for even less money than our current generation of RJ pilot puppy mill guys?

Bottom line: this is good, but it also requires mainline pilots to take back scope.

It has to do with everything, from safety to pay.

They are not going to be able to hire pilots for cheap (in the long run) because there will be less pilots with these requirements. Also it's not just for the pay, more jobs for those who are qualified etc., it's the safety factor as well. The more time a pilot has (in general) the more experience the pilot has gained in order to build those hours. Sure are there some pilots that will spend 1500 hours just doing touch and go's? Sure, which is where the adverse conditions, and multi-pilot rules come into play. The rule is better as a whole for the entire industry.

I have a question.

For us low timers, how do you get from 250 to 1500 with crew conditions and things like that if flying 135 requires 1500 also?

I'm just very confused about how you would reach that 1500... without paying for every hour that is. (and don't tell me banner/pipewatch/etc.)

I mean what real commercial flying job can you have to get to 1500 that has the crew management and all the things they want?(instructing will get you there but not with crew management)

Don't get me wrong, this bill will make pay finally go where it should. people have no idea pilots are underpaid. I tell my friends what FOs make in regionals and even Majors (and how much training cost) and they don't believe me. It's ridiculous.

Flight instruction worked pretty well for a lot of us. And what's wrong with banner/pipewatch ect?

Part 135 doesn't require the 1500, only 1200, which you could get instructing. So it looks likes the steps to get to the airlines would be: Commercial, Instructing, Part 135 flying, Airlines...which is the way it should be instead of the current: Commercial, Airlines.........Fatal accident.

The part that really gets me is that because of ATP mins and low airline pay it's kinda like:

Commercial, Instructing, Airline, Corporate/charter. Where it really shouldn't be that way in my opinion.

It's not about keeping senior pilots in the seat longer, it's about putting experienced talent in charge of the lives of 100 or more people. Doing what it takes to earn 1500 quality hours means guys are no longer going to be able to pay a chunk of money for 300 hours and then be happy to make 16K/year. By the time someone builds 1500 hours instructing or whatever, they'll probably be eeking out some kind of a living, and unwilling to fly for poverty wages. The bottom feeders out there are going to be forced to do what is required to attract talent, not stick warm bodies in a seat for pennies.
