Default Which Airline?

Hey all,

I was looking for some guidance. For arguments sake, let's just say that all legacies/SWA/FedEx/UPS were all hiring, and I recieved offers from all of them...I know, just bear with me!! I am curious what airline would be the best in terms of upgrades/seniority. I don't care about where I live, etc...just curious about upgrade time and seniority. I would think American would be good to go to just because they haven't hired in 10 years. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I would say pick the most financially stable, and/or the one with the most stable management. Delta, seems like they are on the uptick, and gaining ground, but maybe SWA.

Search for the threads which list airline retirement statistics.

I would guess that US Airways would be best in that regard.

If you were referring just to the East, I would agree, lots of old farts. America West hired much more recently, and it is just one list now, even if they can't agree on what the order is.

Yes, East does have a higher age average, so maybe applying for US could be a good idea. I did say to choose an airline that is stable financially, as well having a stable management. US, along with most, if not all legacies, are currently having financial difficulties, so I would stay away from them (anyone with said issues). I am not meaning to bash my own airline, or any other one in that statement. Only to tell you, that you need to be careful when choosing what one to be with.

I am fine, thank you very much, there is nothing wrong with my account now, no big arguments will be started by me, and if there are any questions as to anything that happened earlier, in the thread I started, I will be happy to answer them.

Airline Careers should have the same disclaimer as mutual funds: "Past performance is no guarantee of future performance." Regarding an airline career you are looking at a length of time that could be from 15-30 years and so a "snapshot" of any carrier at any given point in time is pretty much useless if you try to extrapolate that forward.

Here is another way to look at it - If you are trying to get on with the "best" airline at any point in time you probably already missed the boat. Ideally we would all like to get on before an airline becomes "the place to be." Problem is who can predict that?

Since I have been closely following this industry since the early 1990s - no airline has consistently been "the place to be" and I would not expect this industry to suddenly stabilize.

Even IF all of them were hiring, your best bet for longevity and job security is to still go find another career out of aviation.

Akro, answer the guys question. His disclaimer was enough to not warrant a topic divergence.

As far as the best is concerned, I would have to place my bet with SouthWest Airlines. They are some of the best paid pilots in the industry. They also have a culture that is very enjoyable to be a part of for most people. When you have a group of people who enjoy working together as much as SWA people appear to, and make some of the best wages in the industry, that is probably the place to be. Upgrade will be relatively slow, but their FO's make better than many entry level CA's.

Southwest hands down. Since 1971 no airline has come close to the stability and profits that SWA has attained. Look no further.
