just a quick history class for you ..... the reason we have minimum wage( even if is not much), child labor is illegal, 40 hour work week and safety standars ( like rest for truck drivers, mine safety, factory safety...etc),and same pay for same job regardless of gender or race is because of unions.

the reason May 1 is a hollyday everywhere but the USA ( is labor day) is because some US union workers went on strike and got murder by the police and some pinkerton detectives while figthing for a 40 hour week.

ever been outside the country? ever been at any plantation or mine operation in South America or Africa?ever visited a persian rug factory in Egypt? do that, then visit the same operations at unionized sites in the US and Europe or some of the unionized ones in South America ( by the way union organizers in SA are still being murder by hired guns every year to scare others ). then you can make the statement of "i'm anti union" but I seriously doubt you will.

is there corruption in unions? abosolutely, where there is money there is corrupotion and unions bring in money. have some unions grown fat ,dumb and happy and forgot why they exist? sure. are some union leadres totally disconected with the working man or are so full of hate toward the employer they will sacrifice jobs because of their ego?sadly yes.....that is the minority that the very powerfull anty union rigth wing movement wants you to hear, while they sell you the bullcrap of "you can do anything with hard work , this is the land of opprtunity....walmart is awsome......let's screw the middle class and they won't notize...family values....."

if you think all employers will give the emplyees their fare share you are living in lala land look at Sams-Club vs Costco ,how can costco pay $10-12/hour to start with full bennies and sam's 7.5-8.5 with no bennies?(both non union ,costo is the sad rare example of employers taking care of workers and giving what's rigth)

look at the non unior airlines . I can think of ONE non union airline where people are happy are not paid like crap, one : JB. and is still below industry standars when you add up all the other benefits.

read some books on the history of teamsters, mining, factory and farm unionization in the US and some current ones on organized labor around the world( make sure they are written by neutrals or read one from each side of the coin). it might not change your mind, but at least you will come back to reallity.

Does anybody know of any good labor union/management relations type books written from a more neutral standpoint? I think flying the line part I and II are a little biased toward the labor side of things.

The NMB (extension of the Bush adgenda) will NEVER help you.

Give the company a reason to settle the contract.

You could always try this one .... it's just a little on the anti-union side.

another good bunch of books are those that deal with the history of economics and industralization. any adavance college level book on socioeconomic history from the 1900's and up in the US and Europe and those that deal with the same topic on current times for developing countries. they are not history of union books per se but they give you a much bigger picture . your local library migth carry some. unfortunatly in the US history only mandatory in HS and with mediocre and self centered texts. college is better. check it out.

I would think that the reason the SWA pilots rejected the contract extension is that they want to negotiate with the company while they are still making money. I am not speculating about their future but with oil now $76+ a barrel I am not so sure thier profitability will be as good next year. Better to negotiate now

So been working for mommy and daddy isn't that cute? Now lets suppose for one second that you were in the real world... Cause working for your parents is a whole different ball game. Your parents assuming that they're typical parents want to protect you and make sure you have the best that's what parents do... So they are probably paying you a way more than fair wage to work for them. Plus Im guessing that when they get bored or done they will probably move on and give you the entire company evetually? Anyway if the people you were working for weren't your parents dont you think that they would want you to work for as cheap as you possibly could? cause let's face it the cheaper labor is the more management can put into their own pockets and thats what most of business is greed.... The simple fact of the matter is all we as pilots want is a decent living to support our families and way of life with. That is where a union comes in to protect that way of life... Do I agree with every single aspect of the union HE!! NO but do I support the union and see the need for it yes... and that is what a union is all about and good for the SWA guys for going after whats best for them.... Sometime we all have to stand and say screw the company to force management to make better decisions and not to cut our pay to make up for their lacking. Finally I do say RAISE TICKET PRICES and BRING BACK REGULATION
