Boats and ships can give you TA/RAs. Perhaps it was a boat?

Anyone here think TCAS might need to be retooled? Specifically, my concern is the fact that there's no authentication within the protocol (according to everything I've read).

My fear is one day the idiots on the ground with laser pointers will upgrade to GNU radio + USRP and start hitting up planes. Perhaps the time has come for a new version of TCAS that incorporates crypto + authentication to ensure that you're really talking to an aircraft with a non-modified/jacked up transponder.

Maybe...but I doubt anything of size (>30ft) would be in that particular section of the Potomac.

Unfortunately, we only have TCAS I on our aircraft, and IGOR has pointed out "TAFFIC, TAFFIC" many times. There never was any less than 1000 feet of separation though.

Bird Strikes: definitely a few, just small ones (sparrow's, etc).

Deer Strikes: 1. Dikinson, ND. He felt like playing chicken during our takeoff...we won!

As in reversing a climb into a descent, or vice versa?

Default bird strikes - RA/s

Avoided a bird strike on ILS final 4R into Bos - ducked slightly and missed the 2 birds - RA going into EWR - night - Piper Arrow with incorrect altitude reporting - controller told pilot to turn off Mode c - he did not - we got the RA - at 7,000 ft - no conflict but turned slightly off course to be sure - just incorrect altitude reporting by the Arrow according to ATC.

Yes, either a reversal from a climb to descent or vice versa, or an increase in climb or descent, only requires a 2.5 second crew response time and is only a +- 0.35 G manuever.

A reversal call out will be one of four calls ..

"Climb climb now" or "descend descend now" (reversal from either a descend or climb)

"increase climb" or "increase descent" (RA requires an increase in the rate of your climb or descent)

Over VXV yesterday at FL330, we almost hit a balloon (not a kiddie balloon or a weather balloon). It was roughly 2-3 feet in diameter, blue, and had a box hanging underneath it. It passed within 10 feet of the co-pilot side of the side of the aircraft and the CA thought perhaps we took it in the engine.

A regional behind us smartly asked ATC for FL320. They passed under it.

Good times.

Does anyone know if having the radar on discourages birds from crossing paths with aircraft. We generally turn the radar on before takeoff for this reason but I dont know if this is just urban legend. FWIW We havent hit any birds so I cant say it DOESNT work.
