Check your regs and you might wanna revise that statement.

I typically hand fly up to 18ish... sometimes earlier, sometimes all the way up. Depends on how motivated I'm feeling.

Driving Aloft,

I've heard that your policy is not uncommon overseas.

All my knowledge is second hand though.

Our FOM says AP is required use for level flight.

Yep, just checked the FAR. No requirement for the a/p in the climb.

I take that to mean I can handfly all the way to 390.
On page 9.60.2 of your fom under navigation enroute it says "The Autopilot should be operative and engaged during operation in RVSM airspace including climbs, descents, level offs and during cruise , except when cicumstances such as turbulence or retrimming require disengagement"

Me personally with the hand flying, most times I hand fly through 180 and on most approaches that we legally can hand fly for ex precision approach down to cat1 minimums and non prec above 1000/3. I have been suprised by watching many first officers that use the a/p on may approaches. I have just by suggestion tell them if they want go ahead and hand fly it when the wx gets a little low. Most jump on it when you suggest it, maybe training centers get them to locked into the automation.

Heyas,

I've heard that this is a fairly common requirement in Euroville due to the experience level of their pilots and the relative prevelence of zero to hero programs over there.

There are some rather interesting stories from ex-pats...

Of course, if you go asking the same question about us over at PPRune, you'll find we're all a bunch of cowboys who don't know nuttin' 'bout book larnin' and US ATPs aren't worth the paper, er, plastic they're printed on, so your millage may vary.

Interesting, when you search the online FOM, this it was comes up for RVSM...

Cut and Pasted,

Autopilot Use The autopilot should be operative and engaged during level cruise, except when circumstances such as turbulence or re-trimming require disengagement.

9.60.2.is the most restrictive though.
