You will always be a pilot...they can take away your pension, they can take away your income, they can take away your dignity, they can take away your stripes, and apparently they can take away your rollaboard....but you'll still be a pilot!

Not true. Depends on the CA. I've never seen guys turned down. In fact, quite the opposite. If the gate agent notifies us, you're on.

According to the ALPA "JS etiquette" manual published by the jumpseat committee, and the boarding pass printed for offline jumpseaters.... it says 15 minutes.... of course, I may have missed that it says "up to CA's discretion" but I am pretty sure that it doesn't...

You can't automatically assume that "preboarding" is okay - no matter what airline. That's the point. Slice is essentially putting the onus for the lost bag on the OP by stating that by doing it his way, he doesn't risk losing his bag.

If you think it's rude to mention that pre-boarding isn't always "cool" with the airline of JS choice, then so be it. But I think it's rude to assume you get special privilege to board first just because you're a jumpseater.

this guy obviously never was a commuter, back when i actually controlled a j/s everybody be they a twin beech driver,or a 777 legacy captain was treated like a guest in my house, welcomed with open arms. i still owe a debt of gratitude to the AA and NWA guys ,and girls who got me to DFW everytime.

On SWA, the jumpseaters are supposed to board first.

Did that just change? It used to be like that but then it changed to last to board, have you guys gotten back to the preboard for JS'ers? Regardless, it is always a pleasure to JS with you, I just don't do it to aften anymore..

"On SWA, the jumpseaters are supposed to board first."

Not according to the gate agent I specifically asked this question of recently. I'm curious if a SWA pilot can weigh in and let us know if it's really company policy that jumpseaters "are supposed" to board first. References get bonus points.

When boarding starts, I try to be close and make eye contact with the boarding agent. Most of the time, they feel the vibe, and waive for me to come over and preboard. However, I was recently told it's up to the gate agent and that the policy is actually that jumpseats do not preboard but that the policy is usually overlooked.

I have been told this is no longer the case when jumpseating on Southwest the past few times.

What makes it really bad is they issued me a boarding pass which was for the last boarding group and the last number in that boarding group. Yes, I was given the lowest boarding priority on the plane. When I got on I had the choice of any middle seat I wanted and the tough task of fitting my bag in an overhead.

But it's free, so I shouldn't complain, but I am a pilot so I will...I just miss the days of preboarding, ask for the ride, and then finding a nice window seat.
