United to order Boeing and Airbus
#21
It is way past time for an SOS and industry resolve. We watched USAIR get raped and then UAL, DAL, NW each got in line for the same. The future holds many challenges but fear the same results.

Possible Reason for Fleet Split
I don't know much about the 787 or A350, but I was surprised that UAL ordered equal amounts of seemingly similar aircraft. But maybe it was an astute move:
Could it be that UAL got Boeing and Airbus to bid against each other, hoping for a landfall deal of 50 jets, and lowered the price? Then, UAL locked those prices...and split the order 25-25.
I don't see it as fleet growth, just replacement. But if the lease costs are the same as the jets they replace, and maintenance/fuel burn really are reduced, it could tip the ink from red to black.

Granted... I don't know much about these two new aircraft, but this order doesn't seem to make much sense to me. Aren't both of these aircraft designed with the same basic segment, 200-300 seats, in mind? Why would an airline want two different makes of aircraft, with all the associated differences in maintenance, spares, etc., that basically fit the same market niche? Someone in the know please enlighten me...

Don't be offended. Its not personal.
Besides, nobody really wants United to liquidate. That would be horrible.
USAir however ..........
(just kidding)

Thanks for pointing that out to me about being competitors I had not realized that before. But now that you mention it I guess I should not give my "competitors" free rides to work. But hey don't be offended, it's not personal.

TJohn,
You can't delete it, but you certainly can edit it down to nothing. So I'm not going to quote it. Besides, it'll probably get pulled down.
So get it modified, then maybe go for a run, or something. I've been through the furlough experience, I've been there. I'm sorry you're there now. But the sooner you can move beyond the anger stage, the better your life will be.
Good luck (and I mean that sincerely).
...
As for the order: good for United, I suppose. Nobody here knows if that's good for pilots or not. I suspect that the next phase in your history will involve some sort of transformation (i.e. a merger), and that UAL would emerge as the number one carrier, with a great network. Whether the revenue will pick up fast enough to overcome the debt burden is anyone's guess.
We are competitors, and I don't prefer for UAL (or AMR) to come out on top, but both have enormous potential, and both are underestimated at one's peril. It would be silly for anyone (especially management) to spend even an ounce of energy dissing United, when our company should be focused solely on burying them, and we should be focused on our own jobs.

Love the fact you used quotes. This thin skinned, legalistic society kills me. Forget about playing fair, just sue.
