Unions only make up about 15% of the U.S. workforce and there is a reason for that. At one point in time they made sense but if you ask people from the UAW, Eastern, Pan Am, Continental and United how the union helped them Im sure you would get a mix of responses. I would never, ever want a union because they simply take money that should be in my pocket, quite literally its just a business for them. They have no performance based initiatives that force them to do anything for you. I would urge everyone to avoid the union hype and vote no everytime.

Herkulesdrvr,

I think ALPA National is corrupt beyond all belief. They have a conflicting interest they can never defend(protecting/enhancing mainline careers while doing the same for regional pilots who are flying aircraft which are replacing mainline jobs), they care about nothing but money, and they pay there paralegal secrataries more then most RJ CA's/Major FO's make. I am beyond disgusted with ALPA National.

That being said, the men and women who work at the local councils are valuable to me. They help on a local level with contract enforcement, counseling, etc. I appreciate what they do, and ALPA does provide some very valuable assets. I'm not trying to argue union vs non union. I was presenting a question of pure curiousity. I can see how my post could be interpreted as flamebait, but it certainly was not.

If one is happy at Allegiant, then more power to them. It's not for me, I would commute to my domicile and my research seems to show that the trips aren't really commuter friendly. Allegiant just doesn't work for me. I could go on and on as to why I prefer a Union, but like I said that's not why I posted. I was just curious.

Cheers

ALPA didn't do anything. Sure they provide resources, but to say the pilot groups got what they did simply because of ALPA is wrong. Did they go in and say "ALPA" and the company begged for leniency? Wonder how AA pilots ever get anything.

It is due to each group volunteers doing work. Pilots need unions, but don't say it's all because of ALPA.

I see your point and yes its not for everyone. Its good to hear that you are able to get something out of your local reps and for some that is worth it.

That would really bother me.
Well, for starters all pilots should live below their means. Any one of us could be unemployed tomorrow.

Are you the spawn of a Cal 83-85, Ual 85 or Eal 89 hire? You sound an awful like them. If you are at Alg pilot I hope they never go on strike.

My feeling is to do what makes you happy, if its money your interested in then maybe you need a different career like medicine. I will fly no matter what the pay is because I have a family to feed and thats all that I really need to be concerned with. You can either jump on the train or get left behind, either way the choice is only yours to make.

Absolutely. But how do you KNOW your means if you've got a sliding pay scale contingent on the bean counters' ability to juggle the books?

because its tied to operating profit margin. Which does not include things like special items, aircraft purchases ect. It is also the same bar that management is tied to for there bonuses. It also does not change at whims it is a 12 month look back operating profit margin looked at twice a year at the end of the 1Q and after 3Q. even at the bottom pay tier we get around 23% raise from current rates. we get tier 3 minimum for the first year of the three year deal. Have chance to be in tier 4 at the beginning industry estimates put us right around 18.5% margin for the look back at the end of 1Q need to 20% to level up. 1Q is historically the strongest quarter at allegiant.

Plan on:
Worst case scenario- you lose your job
Best case scenario- Tier 1 payscale
Anything more- throw it into savings, retirement, invest it, gamble it, whatever

3rd grade math my friend
