So, let me get this straight.......
You think they were so engrossed in their laptops, that they didn't once look up in over an hour to ascertain their position?? Made no attempt to communicate with ANYONE?? Are you serious? Must have been some sort of captivating computer program

I swallowed the 'on the laptop' reason at first. Thinking about it further I can't justify any possible reason, an alert person would have an unbreakable fixation on a laptop for that long. Unreal. I don't buy it now.
I don't mean to throw stones at these men, however. The peaceful din up front can make a person mighty relaxed. I know, I've felt that before.

The Insidious Nature of Complacency
I don't know what happened but I believe in at first giving people the benefit of doubt. One thing is certain; either way complacency was definitely the culprit. Complacency doesn't care how many safe hours you have flown. Insidious, intangible, and congruent with level of experience; complacency is always lurking in the shadows. We are all victims of it and we should constantly remind ourselves of its existence. Incidences like this are a reminder to us all to look in the mirror and remind ourselves about the dark nature of complacency.

They were careless and endangered the lives of every passenger and crew member on that aircraft. MAINTIAN SITUATIONAL AWARENESS. Another example of stupid, careless mistakes that further degrade the profession. They were sleeping, nobody misses that many radio calls and other attempts at contact.

Nope, I think they had no reason to lie to cover up sleeping when what they admitted too, was going to end up worse for them as far as certificate action. They were fired the moment the hit the gate either way. The OP asked a question and I stated my answer to him. For some reason you have a real bug up your aft end about this, and I can only think your not getting enough of the vegamite, mate....
Why would they make up an excuse (playing on the computer) which would be equivalent to purposely not flying the jet, rather than telling the truth and admitting they were asleep, something which can happen to anyone?
Those guys wish they were sleeping!
If they would have lied about that, and the CVRs proved otherwise (remember, they can look back on CVRs if the FBI needs to), then they would be caught lieing and be in worse trouble than they are now, jail.

You ever flown for a company for 24 years and not get Thanksgiving off because you screwed up your bid with a new bidding program? The FO was teaching the captain what he knew about the new process and if Christmas and New Years was coming up in the next bid, you might be captivated, too. No excuses, but it could happen. Yes, I'm speculating, but so are you.
