Anyone else ever notice that airlines seem to paint their jets in new livery either right before they declare bankruptcy, or immediately upon coming out of it.

Sometimes it looks like every new CEO wants to "mark his territory" by repainting the fleet. We used to have a number of paint jobs in use at the same time, causing some airplanes to emerge from maintenance with "clown noses", mismatched engine nacelles, etc.

Its ALASKA guys....not "Alaskan".
I realize you didn't write the above but just something I thought I would point out.

You guys remember Western Pacific, based out of Colorado Springs in the mid 1990s? I think just about every one of their jets had a crazy paint scheme.

I'll bet that you wouldn't have to dig too deep to find the personal financial relationship between the airline officers and boards and the major interests at the paint facilities.

A friend of mine paints widebodies at the Boeing plant here in Seattle, and from what I remember, a typical paint job costs about $500,000 I beleive. Of course it goes up as the detail increases.
Apparently Air Canada tails are what they hate the most. It uses something like 7 or 8 layers to complete. I don't recall the price tag on that scheme though.

It must be cheap because Delta changes their livery every couple years or so. I don't even know what the current livery is anymore.

How much of the cost was kickbacks and graft off the taxpayer's back? That paint job is disgusting. What next? An advertisement for condoms?
