iphone help for int'l flying

My iPhone (with AT&T) did not work the first time I took it to London.
So, I went through a series of checks they gave me, and next time I was there it worked fine. In Africa, I think I pay about $4 minute to call or receive a call. With the AT&T international plan ($5.99 month), text messages are 50 cents each.
As previously noted, turn off data roaming, and put it in airplane mode. Use Wifi nodes to internet and Skype, for free.
Next time, I will get an unlocked phone from any of the internet providers, and use local sim cards with whatever country I'm in. And I'd use T-Mobile in the US.

Most of Europe, including Spain, is $1.29/min. If you sign up for the world traveler it knocks it down to .99/min. Still a little pricey but not as bad as Kazakhstan at $4.50/min. At least AT&T works everywhere I have ever been and when your getting reimbursed for you cell expense I choose the carrier that has great coverage.
Crazy thing about AT&T. I could call China from the US on my cell phone cheaper than I could call from my land line.

I would suggest getting one of international data packages. There are always times when you need the data the iphone was built for and no wifi connection in sight. Be careful though, the data package does not cover all countries.
