Thought I read an article recently about a Middle Eastern carrier flying to west Africa over the desert, but for the majority of the route there are no "suitable airports" within the required distance, min lever of ARFF, EMS, etc.
So much more than flotation, like the man said. To answer the question, yes. ETOPS really has to do with suitable alternate airports within the qualified ETOPS AOA.
P.S.
AirTran will fly in GUM when AirMike says they can = NEVER. Sorry, but it's the truth.

That's just as well...it would be difficult to assign RSV's to cover trips in Guam since we are all based in ATL. /

Fly safe!

. . . . Mmmmph!

Seriously 2nd in charge at LAX told me this. I am was sceptical. because of the topic of the thread I would throw this in. Honestly, I rarely have an idea at all about what or where we are going next. This goes back to leardership.

If management or the union can give us the big picture, we could all pull in that direction to make that happen. I know, naieve, to think it could ever happen, but I am a glass is half. New union is trying, and doing a much better job of telling us whats going on. I still have questions like what happened with our last two hostages.

The ETOPS questions real (I was currrious) Micronesia while fanciful has, full flights, paying big dollars. CAL owns Hawaii to South Pacific. Only other choice is a C-17, or to go through Austrailia or Japan. While I know Kat Milliker does not think much of my comments, I would ask him (a person seemingly in the know) pass on some good info, either union, Airtran, or even his/her own personal opinion. Perception often creates reality (just look at housing prices or the stock market)

Come on Kat (I know you have a lot on your plate) give us some crumbs

Our 737 flight from HNL-GUM stops like 5 times. I will try and find the pairing and paste it here. The layover for the GUM crew in HNL is 74 hours..... nice for those who live in HNL and commute to GUM(yes some do). The nonstop on the 767-400 is like 6-7 hours. I've operated it a handful of times. Full every single day and every time I've flown that trip there has been a fed in the jumpseat.

Most of my efforts are focused on trying to protect the rights of our pilots and secure a decent contract . . . I don't know anything at all about the Company's plans . . . . but keep in mind they recently raised $250 Mil for purposes that have not yet been divulged. Probably to meet financing covenants for future deliveries, and paying for our upcoming contract, but who knows?

Random chance or are the Feds up to something? Back luck probably. I guess I have been lucky. All the feds I have flown with have been pretty cool. Maybe I am not screwing up too bad. I do tend to do things per them AOM, unless situations require free thought. Then again as an FO I don't get paid to think too much.

At Airtran the Captain pax-brief most always mentions the "co-captain". I tell the captians I fly with it will cost them $5.00/hr for my co-captian pay. (I never get to collect it!!!) Well we all have to put are time in the right seat. No worries. Hopefully my time will come someday. I am thankfull I am not furloughed or being replaced by an RJ.
That said my union has my support.

I would say....No, they are not 'up' to something.

Besides taking the 'Island Hopper' (HNL-5 leg shuffle to Guam on the B737-800), or going through NRT out of EWR or IAH, there's not a lot of options to get to GUM other than HNL-GUM on the B767-400.

Since CAL has a base in GUM, the POI (and other FED type of peeps - MX, Cabin, ect) need to do their job out in GUM. More times than not, this leads to "FED A'la mode in JS". The times that I have experienced this (which is most of the time), the CA is sometimes able to 'offer' the FED a 'much' more comfy seat in Business First....most of the time they will take it if it's available.....unless there is a "required quota" line observation, then there they sit in the JS droning 7+ hrs to GUM....fun had by all.
