Don't shoot the messenger, I agree with you. However, it does happen. I was fired for blogging - CNET News
You could say that Delta overreacted, but we also don't know what she posted.
Look at the how the Facebook profile of the female co-pilot in the Colgan crashed was used against her, both in the media, public, and professional realms.

I am on the networking sites, but I took down any photos of work things years ago. No pictures in uniform and I try not to mention my company by name.
You can set these things to private so only people you invite can view your info.
Oh and don't befriend bosses or your subordinates. I had a college friend who is now a highschool teacher nearly get fired for befriending her students. Innocent enough right? Uh, well one of her students parents saw her daughter perusing her teachers profile and saw pictures from college of her drinking, dancing, and messages from friends about "how drunk they got" or "what bar they are going to friday". Well, Students mom flipped out, took it to the school board...all hell broke loose, and she barely got to keep her job.

Then again if you decided to write something libelous and someone takes offense and presses the issues they could go to court and then the court could subpoena the website for your accounts info, which has your email address...and then they could find out who you are.
Best practice is post like everyone knows who you are...I know there are people on here who know who I am (and there are probably more than I am aware of)

There is no verification by the public about what we say. Who in the public really knows if i work for quantas. As soon as you identify yourself, by name or inference (photo), as someone that works fof company x, you put yourself out on a limb.
If you have a union, like those who are hired and off probation, you could be ok. It depends on what is negotiated. Look to the contract or your employee manual. No job? Still on probation? That Limb is very weak.
Southwest and other companies spend a lot of money on their brand and how it is percieved. A group of posters who use or identify themselves by that brand without even having gone thru indoc might raise some eyebrows.
I'm not afraid of facebook, but I wouldn't post or join a group that was specifically devoted to a company I didn't work for yet. Southwest is nice, but they don't have to be. After doing all that work to get hired, why chance it?
New k Now.

Yes we do. I know exactly what she posted. While the pictures of her in suggestive poses on board the aircraft while in uniform was the last straw, she also posted negative stories about customers and co-workers.
Don't post public stories about how your boss is an idiot and you hate your customers and then act suprised when you get fired.

What I am seeing i not, Don't put your name on Facebook because you are an airline pilot but more Dont get on facebook and share anything about yourself on the internet anywhere, ever. Well personally I have many friends from work and otherwise on Facebook. I post info knowing that anyone in my group can see it. I will agree with you the internet can be a "scary" place but welcome to the new reality fellas. If you really think that avoiding Facebook, Twitter, etc. is the only way to live your life, go for it. If you believe otherwise please feel free to meet over on the Facebook page and hey if not, no big deal. By the way as stated above, I m pretty sure we all had to give our "real" names, e-mail etc just to get on this site so good luck with your anonymity....
