Hmm let's see. UAL is ill with a bad cold, and CAL is wondering whether or not to get into bed with them. After discussions, deliberations amongst themselves, CAL thought it better to stay away from UAL and avoid catching their cold which would turn into the Swine Flu. Good choice don’t you think?

If they had wanted to merge, the two companies wouldn't have needed to do this song and dance routine.
Remember, CAL already sat down and looked at UAL's books last year when a merger was contemplated. After seeing the mess over there, CAL went running and said not only NO but H**L NO! There was just too much to fix. An alliance? Yeah, we can do that!
If this had NOT been approved, there would have been a stronger likelihood of a merger in order to keep up to speed with the likes of Delthwest. The next step is to see if the revenue targets meet the desires of both companies. If not then I would expect, dinner, drinks and cigar meetings between the top execs about a merger again.

I am sure that "terms" have been rewritten.....that is why it is still not dead. CAL had a choice of who to join an alliance with ya know.

If that means that UAL gets right-sized and the new DAL is giving us a good spanking, then that's when it will occur.

CAL is doing a lot of right sizing itself
UA seems to be standing pat on capacity from what has been announced in the press. Right now, it seems more right sizing is in the cards for CAL than UA.

Tilton and Kellner had come to terms. Unlike UAL where Tilton got to stack the BOD with his cronies, the CAL BOD saw the deal in a negative manner and did their duty.
Kellner didn't call the KIO and was more than ready to engage.

UA's capacity reductions are big, but now many of the other legacies are catching up, including CAL announcing significantly larger cuts recently.

When the dust settles you'll have a very reduced UAL merge with a slightly smaller CAL. The size of the carrier will probably be a little larger than UAL was in their glory days.

Don't hold your breath but stranger things have happened. I still see UAL shrinking further with CAL probably cutting as well but not nearly as much.

CAL Furloughs....147
vs.
UAL Furloughs....850'ish'+?? (Any UAL guys feel free to pin a more accurate number with insider news)
There is no doubt there will more 'right sizing' before a deal is put in place if one should come about in the future. Shoot, CAL is talking about downsizing the FA ranks....could this lead to pilots as well?? Logic would say they would go hand in hand.
In Mgt's point of view, it only behooves them to slice and dice down to bare-bones minimum staffing when/and if they decide to pull the trigger with a shot-gun wedding in the future. Running an airline these days with min/or below min staffing is their Mantra as we all well know.
Bottom line.....regardless of what uniform you wear today....."pilots on the street tomorrow" sucks either way
