You have an altitude hold switch on the overhead panel? (i.e. forward for off)

It is reversed from the rest of the switches on the glare shield but I was thinking of one that's forward for off, not not down.

Well you've got me stumped. The only thing I can find on the overhead that fits your question would be the observers O2 off/on switch. Is that it?

FWIW, the later DC-8's had the comparator and all had the the mirror for the compass.
