Does Delta really need a 747 on ATL-HNL-ATL

Not for the pax. I rode in the back of "an eskimo". I'll take a whale any day.
Back in the day when I was with HP, the 747 from PHX was the employee commuter/frequent flyer express.

When I was in initial at NWA there was a poster on the wall at NATCO of a 747 Classic. The photo was taken by one of our pilots and blown up to about 4 ft by 6 ft. It was there to commemorate the last scheduled passenger flight (non-charter) of the classic whale at NWA. Many crewmembers signed it and left their memories on the wall for all to read. One by an FA struck me in particular. She wrote "Remember when we used to fly this from MSP-ORD, the plane was packed and we did a full service with breakfast!".
My how times have changed.

WOW! Those flights seemed impossible to non-rev on with the WBs. It was already a nightmare. I can't even imagine what it'll be like with 737s. And sooooo uncomfortable! Uuughhhh!

Does this aircraft really fit well on this route? Are the loads that massive? I know back in 2001 Delta used to send the L1011 (I miss that airplane) on this route but that was only about 300 seats about 2 or 3 times a day. With the 747 on this route Delta now has 400+ seats and a mix of 763's and 764's flying there. Don't get me wrong, I thinks its cool that there are domestic 747 flights and I hope to nonrev on that flight before its yanked out of Honolulu. I was just wondering if the loads are there to fill up that airplane.

The real question is why didn't they pull the 777 off NRT and send it to HNL, then send the Whale ATL-NRT? It does seem a waste to send a 747-400 to HNL and let a 777 overfly it to NRT.
Perhaps since this is a low yield route (lots of FF miles and cheapos) they discovered one 747 is cheaper than two 777s in terms of seat mile costs?
