SWA looking to buy unnamed domestic carrier
#12
It would be better to let SW into ATL, and then run em out ala JB, than hang the albatross of AT around our necks. Let's see how MSP works out first before we all hail the conquering hero. Besides, SWA does serve ATL, just through BHM.

It's been brought up in "expert" realm of aviation (various trade articles) that Southwest was looking at a merger with AirTran as early, or late, as last summer.

Didn't SWA buy Morris Air with all their MD-80's. I could see them buying a carrier with a different aircraft type and getting rid of them all. In addition, it is Possibly time for SWA to diversify into a second type anyway. If a systemic mechanical problem were to ground the entire 737 fleet SWA would be in big trouble.

I think it's a great move for SWA to purchase a large carrier. I'd be stoked if it was Alaska with their great West/NW USA and Mexico network (yeah, international flying baby!), good employee morale, and solid fleet of Boeing 737's. If it's not Alaska, I think it will be ScareTran. We'd just dump their 717's and furlough their bottom folks. Only kidding!
Gary Kelly's gotta do something while our stock sits at the bottom of the Mariana Trench.

My guess would be Alaska....
The TA basically spells out the aquisition of a carrier that owns a regional codeshare. The union said the language was built around a specific airline.
Alaska has...
All 737 fleet
Hawaii
Mexico
HUDs
RNP
Row 44 inflight Wi-Fi (same company as SWA)

Just how open is Southwest's new scope?
Buying Alaska would be a good way to kick Delta in the nuts, hard. Delta's feed into the Pacific system on the west coast is heavily dependent on Alaska.
Southwest IS becoming a hub and spoke major. I think they are looking at incremental revenues from connecting passengers instead of being only focused on point to point.
