Look, I have no problem with guys commuting. We have pilots living in TPA, JAX, TYS, CHS, PNS, -- none of which were EVER a pilot base at DAL or NWA. That's fine. That's their CHOICE. I just don't think we should have to move mountains to accommodate their personal choice. That's all. Every $ spent to accommodate the additional cost to the corporation, is one dollar less that can be paid to those of us that DID elect to move to one of the many cities DAL (or NWA) had a crew base in. If your base closes, I do sympathize, and I'd be more than willing to pay positive space for 5 years, until you can move. But for the majority of commuters, who live where they live simply because they want to, I don't like making less, so they can do that.

It could happen. But when I got hired by DAL, I moved to ATL. Figured it was the safest place to be to AVOID uprooting my family. So far, its worked. No guarantees for the future. I have no disdain for the commuter, hoser. What I DO have disdain for, is the entitlement mentality, that thinks the pilot group ought to pay the price so you can live in East Bumble, just cause you want to. NO other corporation tolerates that mentality, why do we? Both of my siblings have moved to where the job was, but somehow we think pilots should be different. There isn't a six figure job out there, where you can live in ANY city in the WORLD that you want, except ours. And I respect that right. But don't make me pay for it, and those who want all these concessions for commuters are asking for that very thing.

Pineapple,
I have commuted Since 1988 and yes it was my choice. I chose to do so after the company promised that Sea base was there to stay and many guys sold homes in other bases, moved to Sea, and bought homes. 5 months later, base closes. I almost moved and was planning on it. Then and there I decided to live where I wanted because you never know what the airline is going to do. Over the years DAL and NWA have opened and closed many bases. For some commuting is not a choice. Over the life of the Call in honest policy at Nwa I used it 3 times. It ws a policy that the company had. It cost the pilot group nothing. It was not contractual in that the union gave up someting to get it. If they did I am not aware of it. I agree with Acl. It needs to be addressed. If not it will cost the company money not you. I don't want you to pay for it.(of the 3 times I used it, only once did a passenger get bumped.)

No sweat, hockeypilot. I had a sign-in an hour ago, but had to call in sick just to keep this thread alive! Oh, and watch the basketball game....

I only fly the trips on my line I want to. I call in sick for all the rest. They're MY sick leave hours anyway, right?

Similarly, previously a DAL-N pilot had only 5 cities he could live in and not commute -- now HE has 9. So more choices for ALL. More choices = less commuting.

What am I missing? And if you come up with the excuse that, because all the equipment is moving around to different bases, and people are chasing equipment, then I rest my case - commuting is a CHOICE!
What you're missing is that you're being South-centric. There is a whole new group of DAL pilots who commute and like the longer trips as a result. Pretty simple really. Not much to get upset about.

keenster, I was with you, right up until you made that comment. ANYTHING that costs the company money eventually costs ME money. That's just the way life works. I've talked to several former MEC reps who admitted all of the changes to our payrates in C2K would add additional burdens on our DB. "No sweat," they said, "that's the company's problem. They'll just have to fund it." Well, they had to.... until they didn't. And the rest is history.

What does longer trips have to do with commuting? If they actually LIKE longer trips, they can still bid those and NOT commute. The only connection is that BECAUSE they CHOOSE to commute, they want the company to build longer trips to minimize the commute. Again, no problem with that, so long as those longer trips don't cost the company money -- meaning it costs ME money....

I would do that at NW if I had to. I tried not to do that so I could avoid the added hotel expense. Fewer nights in a hotel on my dime. A 27/28 hr 5 day worked out really well.

What I was trying to get at is that NWA decided that the call in honest saved them money in that having to cancel a trip because a pilot is not there gets expensive. It was my understanding that call in honest worked well for the company. If a guy does not make it at DAL maybe they GS the trip and that cost the company more. Or if they cancel a full flt that cost the company money. I think the call in honest is a win win especially if it is a nonnegotiated policy. But maybe we can not get it here without giving up something ,DAL is a different animal.

Dude! You get an "A" for sheer bloody mindedness. Good grief man. We get it. You think commuting is a choice. Good for you. As a commuter I like 5 day trips because I don't have to commute as often, and it cuts down on the hotel costs. A few thousand others agree with me.
