Minor correction: AirTran allowed as many 'jumpseaters' as there were flightdeck jumpseats. On both their 71 and 73, there's only 1 seat, thus 1 jumpseater. This policy is similar to what many other carriers were doing @ the time. Air Tran would then allow any additional off-line pilots to travel as a non-rev for $25. Even though it appeared that Air Tran was charging for the jumpseat, they weren't - they just didn't have an unlimited jumpseat policy. It was better than the alternative of being left @ the gate, like all other limited jumpseat carriers. In January 2007 Air Tran went to unlimited.

What % of the APA group commutes anyway?

Listen folks - this rumor was SQUASHED by our very own jumpseat chairman. The rumor was supposedly started by someone confused over INT'L TAX charges while trying to jumpseat - that's it. There are no jumpseat fees at AA, or any other airline that I'm aware of, unless you are Int'l and must pay the tax at all airlines.

aa73,
glad you clarified that.
FWIW, I j/s a couple of days ago on Alaska (great crew BTW), and the capt. told me the same thing about ATA and the airlines trying to start charging for jumpseats. I can't remember where he said he heard it, but I think it was from an AA pilot.

FWIW, I emailed the ATA and asked them; (names have been substituted to protect the innocent)

The Air Transport Association does not advocate charges, or in any way involve itself with airline jumpseat policy.

Hope this helps,

Hello,

I recently heard a rumor and I would like to get some clarification.
Does your organization advocate that your member airlines charge a pilot
for a jumpseat?

Regards,

Another reason to sell apples on a street corner and sing Broadway Showtunes with a tip jar nearby.

What will be next charging the pilot's for fuel used.

He could be referring to 'ATA airlines'---members of the Air Transport Association.

I wouldn't put it past them do try it; but you cannot charge a pilot for a seat that isn't for sale.

Why not, Gulfstream Airlines has been charging for a copilot seat that shouldn't be for sale for years.

You are 105% wrong.

ATA went out of business in April 2008... Aloha went out of business in March 2008.
