ATA airlines attempting to start charging to jumpseat?
#12
Sorry...I Missed Something.
"I just flew in on AA XXXX from XXX to XXX. The Captain pulled myself and three (other airline) pilots aside and informed us that their Union just got word from their management that AA, along with all the airlines that belong to the ATA, have decided to push through a $25.00 jumpseat fee for all jumpseaters, no matter if you are in a jumpseat or seat in the back.
Lets see you commute to work 5 times a month that adds up to $250.00 a month. When I asked the Captain what he had heard from the his Union he stated that they were trying to fight it but need to get everybody and their Unions on board to fight this. If my figures are correct then this would add up to nearly $3000.00 a year."

I don't think that will flush with most carriers. First of all, American pilots would be left out in the cold with little jumpseat options of their own and secondly, it opens up Pandora's Box from some legal issues. In a previous life, we were told, in no uncertain terms, that if a Captain ever even accepted the equivalent of a "pass fee" from a jumpseater, he would be terminated ! Period.
I think this Captain was either pulling your chain or delusional...or both.
BTW, ArticDog, your math is correct and you get a 100%.

Okay folks. I'm sorry I didn't realize my question was going to come under such attack.
First, yes, I was referring to the Air Transport Association. This is the "trade organization" the airlines belong too. This was metioned in my quote. Maybe I should have worded the titile to the thread better. Sorry.
Second, I am only quoting a reliable source from my own airlines union board. I do believe the quoted exchange did in fact take place, however it is quite possible the AA pilot didn't have his facts straight or the quoted pilot misunderstood. Thus, why I posted this here to see if any pilots out had heard this or this was just bad information.
Third, what right do you have to have my post removed! If there was some truth to this at all don't you think we would want to be informed so we could take a stand and stop it? I am getting displaced soon and will be commuting and just like the next guy I don't want to be charged for using the jumpseat.
I'm not trying to rip on AA pilots, APA, ALPA, jumpseaters, captains, fo's, math teachers or anyone else! For god sakes, I just heard something and I thought I could come here to see if some of my professional peers had heard anything of this. Not to get my head ripped off.
Mods, if you think I am way off base, by all means remove the thread and we can be done with all this!

Sounds like you had good reason to come ask the question, I would have too.
Hopefully no one else has heard the same thing...anyone who thinks the ATA has not contemplated or discussed something like this is probably in fantasy-land. Hopefully they would decide it would not be worth the backlash.
I would personally attempt to organize a commuters-stay-home protest...for the month of Dec 2009.

Heard the same thing from one of CAL's Jumpseat committee guys so its got some legs. AA management suggested it and supposedly the Union hasn't blinked yet. Don't shoot the messenger but this is coming from some fairly reliable sources.

Thanks GB,
There is some discussion on our APA message board about this. Sort of sounds like another "something AA wants" What else is new?
While I do not commute or jumpseat often, i'd have to seriously add "over my dead body" to this happening.

A few years back AirTran charged 25 dollars to jumpseat if you could not ride in the cockpit. It would be up to individual airlines to decide if they want to charge or not. I have heard rumors of charges. Most of this is coming about with the inclusion of flight attendants in jumpseat agreements. The number of jumpseaters carried has soared. ATA really has nothing to do with it. In most cases if a airline decideds to charge it would put them in violation of their recipricol jumpseat agreements and they would be terminated. Airlines are looking for every source of revenue so you never know what management will try and do.
