Default More Great News for you SWA poolies!

If you have read the Company's earnings release today you clearly saw where our CEO announced zero planned growth for 2009 and 2010. That news is a significant setback for our pilot group. The Company will take delivery of 9 new aircraft in 2009 and as of this writing will retire older classic aircraft to end the year with 535 aircraft, down from 537 in 2008. Additionally, 2010 and 2011 delivery schedules have been modified with 2010 now down to 10 aircraft delivery. Unfortunately, the Company is planning 10 retirements in 2010.

Welcome to the new southwestern airways, Herb is gone, and GK is in full control

I'd blame oil before GK.

You can't grow forever or undercut prices when on a level playing (paying?) field.

Best of luck to all at Southwest.

Can you blame it on code share, Ask the 20 year FO's at US Air how they like code share!

I'd blame Age 65 before oil...

I was under the impression the new SWA codeshares were strictly international and new flying. I think the blame lies elsewhere.

Ask yourself how you'd grow SWA if you took the reigns. In the current economic climate how can you justify growth for growth's sake?

Or the 18 year FO's at AAL. One thing as a pilot community we've been able to discern is that the only habitually profitable company enjoys these few things (at least until recently): happy, well paid employees, NO code share, and NO regional jets.

Coincidence? I think not. However, it's probably just as unrealistic to assume the SWA would continue growing into perpetuity. My only criticism is that they probably should have pocketed some of that fuel hedge money for a stock buy back or a special dividend rather than continue to pass it along in reduced fares. JMHO. Still a great place comparitively...

Plans come and plans change. If the economy improves they can change the delivery schedules fast or retire fewer aircraft. The point to point markets in the US are tapped out. SWA is adapting by going more to a hub model but they days of 10 percent year over year growth are I suspect over forever for SWA unless a major airline goes under.
On the subject of fuel hedges a friend who was a assistant CP at SW was at a meeting where the CEO stated that they intended to use their fuel hedges to drive one or possibly two major airlines out of business. It almost worked. They came very close. That is why they they kept the fares so low.

Uggh, the hits just keep coming, anyone know how many pilot retirements are scheduled for next year? I know not all the age 60 + guys aren't sticking it out are they? I think I will be in one of the first classes once they start again but I am really hoping I am not waiting until 2010 or worse.

I really cannot believe that people are surprised about this one... I like WN as the next guy and always appreciate the ride both when revenue and non-reving but the loads have fallen off a cliff. AA, UAL (not shocking), US are losing lots of money.

I would be happy that WN is looking at that above mentioned fact and maintaining profits were they exist. Just be happy they are not furloughing.

The next SCHEDULED retirements won't be until Dec 2012
