Default US Airways pilots forming merger committee

snipped from the www.post-gazette.com tonight
====================================

A special meeting planned by the US Airways pilots union board next Thursday and Friday with an agenda that includes the selection of merger counsel as well as the creation of a merger committee. The meeting was called by union chairman and US Airways board member Bill Pollock, who could not be reached yesterday.

Pilots spokesman Jack Stephen said the union does not "know any more than anyone else if a transaction is going to happen with America West or anyone else." The meeting was not called "because we have been given a wink and nod that something is going to happen."

The move this week by America West's pilots union leaders to force the resignation of their chairman, CJ Szmal, so that the union has "the appropriate leadership in place" as the merger talk heats up, according to an e-mail from union officer J.R. Baker, who was named the new chairman yesterday.
