Just got back from my interview. They told us mid Oct for DB, and anyones guess for when classes would be offered. Was a great experience, it's going to be a long 5 weeks!

I have a theory...

SWA was and is getting ready to exploit any holes in DEN or other places as UAL parks aircraft and Frontier faces a tough road. At 150 barrell oil, the future at both looked bleak.

Now closer to 100 bucks a barrell, nobody is raking in cash, but Frontier and UAL aren't going away for a while. Perhaps the rush to expand might be delayed a little longer...

Just a theory... I hope they hire 500 more as soon as possible. Getting the manning right at an company, much less an airline, seems to be some serious cosmic voodoo....

I think your theory is right on. SWA is a company known to regularly plan for a number of future business scenarios at one time--both good and bad for the company. The company usually retains the ability to change course at a moments notice when the environment changes.

With the SWA commitment to Denver, the competition there must be fierce right now. As stated, the competition may not be as weak as they were just 2-3 months ago. I think SWA management is reacting to a longer fight than maybe they initially expected. The vacuum from a failed carrier in Denver may not need to be filled in the immediate short term. Ultimately, SWA will fill that void. Question is "When?"

That was the case when Herb was "the man"! We now have our wonderful Gary Kelly running the ship and he's more worried about codesharing and RJ partners than expanding ourselves. Unfortunately we have a sh!tload of pilots with their heads buried so deep in the sand they will gladly vote for a T/A that allows this sh!t to happen.

We do? How did you arrive at this conclusion? Did I miss a poll?

DB meets on Monday? How long does it usually take to get the call or letter?

Yes.

the many guys I've flown with that say "i will do this job for free" ... "this is my retirement job" .... "when the stock hits $20 I'll retire" ... "I'll take a paycut to save the company" ... "Age 65 won't effect you ... you'll get 5 more captain years out of the deal" ... "I was chatting in the Chief's office before this trip and he said...." do I need to say more?

I agree with your first statement, which is alarming. Moving from never codesharing, to codesharing with one airline, then to move to try and codeshare with 6 airlines, while growth becomes stagnate is not a good thing.

From what I've seen and from what I've read on the SWAPA forums, it seems like most pilots are concerned about codesharing and scope in our upcoming T/A. Those with their heads in the sand, seem to be the more senior Captains who already got theirs.

Welcome to Southwestern Trailways.

And how about that great new contract proposal with a 5 year pay freeze

How could that be? I thought SWA cared about its pilots, and would pay them top dollar until hell froze over.

Or maybe it's just another money-grubbing airline?

Good luck with your pay freeze. Even spineless DAL pilots got something more than a pay freeze. Not that they should be proud of it.

p.s. Yes, I was offered a job at SWA, and no, I did not accept.
