UAL to Rethink Fleet Size Decrease and Furloughs
Looks like UAL's plan to get rid of the 737s and Furlough 1000+ pilots is being adjusted... mainly due to flying hour forecasts... but my guess is also that fuel prices are lower. New plan for 2009 requires many of the soon to be parked 737s (30ish) to remain on property for the calendar year... also, manning levels were improperly calculated... resulting in a stop to 737 surpluses for the time being and impending furloughs.
Might just be a stall by mgmt... but a move in the right direction for the short term. Only time will tell.

ugleeual, just curious where your information came from. Seriously hoping it is true but I haven't seen anything put out by the union or the company (although I haven't checked unimatic.) One of the recent e-mails from the union said another 48 furloughs on October 22 and of course the second round of bumps closes on September 2nd.
Thanks for any information.

There was a note on Unimatic this morning from Paul Carlson. No real details, but said that they had "over surplussed" in the first round, and that some of those surpluses would be canceled. Also said that the block hour forecast for 09 will have more hours and that the depth and timing of furloughs will have to be looked at.

It just dawn on me that UAL mgmt treat their employees, their families more like contractors than employees and alike. Talk about getting the pink slip, getting depressed, trying to find a job in the meantime, finally found a decent place to hang your hat, and all of a sudden they want to yank you back into the puddle of water. Oh, and btw, we may not need you later next year! And we're not talking about a few hundreds affected like at AirTran or Spirit...

If this is true, it really shows light on how inept management is at UAL.
They should know what they need in man hours and airplanes. You dont change the numbers that much on oil going down 30 dollars. It could go back up tomorrow.
