Default CAL Negotiations

Should CAL ALPA have on their negotiation committee a member who was heard to say that CAL currently could not afford any improvements to our next contract and to be reasonable in our expectations?

Does it concern you that a person hired between 1983 and 1985, (yes, a Scab), is holding that position as well?

I'm thoroughly concerned that the Pilots currently representing us at the table are suffering from Stockholm Syndrome and forget that they are supposed to be representing us, the Pilots.

Unfortunately this is happening right now with one of our own, and if we don't switch gears, we probably will repeat the fiasco that was Contract '02.

What do you think?

I think this person should be let go. We need maddogs in there ready to attack if we even hope to get 20% more pay and change the work rules. Sadly, if you look at our past "negotiations" we have always shot ourselves in the foot. I do not know why we don't have a paid professional doing this instead of a potentially well intentioned pilot. However, the bigger question is what do the other negotiating think and why don't they run him/her off? Are the of the same fabric?

One wasn't but now is and the other one is a leftover from Contract '02. A truly sad bunch that were pinning our hopes on.

I've wondered the same thing.........Instead of sending a bunch of ding-bat pilots that have no idea or training in negotiations in there, why don't we use our dues, hire a pit-bull, executive-eating, hard charging Attorney to go in there and kick some @$$

What we do is like asking a flight attendant to come land the plane because there's low visibility and a nasty crosswind.

Its a good enough strategy for management when they hired Mike Campbell, why can't we do the same thing?

I've been saying that to guys I fly with, and most disagree. Will this pilot group ever learn? I'm voting "NO" until I get a good contract in every area- even the areas that do not apply to me personally. No more screwing the other guy; I got mine mentality.

Pelican, You need to talk to your reps about how negotiations work. I suspect you have hired and retained some of the best labor attornies around. Negotiations don't involve pounding fists on tables. A proposal is put in writing and brought to the table. It is exchanged and the teams leave. The other side reviews it and may come back to the table for some verbal clarification if needed. Then the attornies go at it behind the scenes. A counter is produced and delivered by the negotiating team. The process repeats. I would guess you have at least 5 expert labor attornies working with your negotiating committee. I know my airline always does.

What's the use? Pilots in the United States will continue taking paycuts anyway. Ten years from now wide body CA will be making as much as European turboprop FO. I have never seen a weaker pilot group than the one in the USA.

Why can't they continue to lead the way? Doing the "heavy lifting" seemed to work out well for both of them before...oh, wait a minute, maybe not.
