An excellent post and a wonderful story. It helps me reading that given the turbulent times that we as pilots are facing these days. I too have come on to the scene to late to remember the glory days of being an airline pilot, but I do consider myself "Old School" and try to make the best of the situation that we are in. It is a great job to have and I feel lucky to be where I am every time I feel the thump of the gear going up.

As did I. I feel a certain amount of pity for the current generation of flyers who haven't been introduced to Bach and Gann and the few others like them. Sometimes that stuff is the only thing that keeps me sane. They ought to mandatory reading for the ATP exam.

The very worst day in the cockpit beats the very best day behind a desk.

Gann resigned his seniority to join an airline that eventually folded. He started over again as an FO and flew freight in the Korean war until eventually taking up writing full time.
