Not sure how many sons McCain has but one is at the Naval Academy or just graduated. There was an article in our alumni magazine recently. If my memory serves me right he may have just finished his plebe (freshman) year. He will have an eight year commitment from wings before he can get out of the Navy if he becomes a pilot.

Sky High, you must be High. Look at the only carrier not sinking, southwest. They are the highest paid in the pax industry, yet they make a profit. How, well there are tons of reasons, here are a few. BTW none includes stop flying or cutting work force.
1. Attitude reflects leadership.
2. Paid for aircraft.
3. Reasonable mgmt wages.
4. Cash is King.

All true ....for now..and don't forget to advise folks to save up so they can buy their type rating $6-8000 to get the job....would hate for anyone to be surprised by that. Eastern was thought to be the best at one time too.

Lets not pat yourself on the back too much over their at SWA. I agree with your points and you are an excellently managed airline and appear to be in mgmt/labor bliss BUT your own companies most recent quarterly report acknowledged that without the fuel hedges SWA would have lost money last quarter. But you do in fact have the hedges which is a compliment again to the foresight of your mgmt. It is interesting that DAL and UAL sold SWA their hedges in their bankruptcies thus adding to SWA's ability to compete and undercut. From what I heard the creditors forced the sale because they were tangible assets worth money that could be used to meet current financial obligations (or mgmt pension obligations as some have said).
But... their achillies heel may well be their (essentially) 100% exposure to the US domestic market. They better pray that this recession is short lived, because when Joe 6-pak quits flying to Disney, SWA ain't got no place to make up that lost revenue.
I'm not demeaning the SWA model. It is what it is, and it works well, but it is apples to bowling balls to compare them to the legacy carriers. They don't even remotely provide the same product.

Serenity now. Serenity now. Do you guys really believe all that about SWA? AHHH, I just can't do it. After 3 years of being on here, it's truly enlightening to see who gets it. I've been reading for three years that SWA was going to crumble. 25 years ago, everyone said SWA couldn't hang with the legacies. I won't bash any other airline, but come one guys, get a grip. SWA is here to stay.

Not to mention they only have one aircraft type (reducing training and maintenance costs)

Its ironic, the demise of this country was always the best material George Carlin .............too bad he died Sunday.
The airline industry seems to magnify everything that is wrong with capitalism.

He's sick of disney...he prefers Denver for skiiing in the winter and summers in new England....
SWA will expand as the legacies reduce.... they'll keep winning this game because they have made the rules....
