I think that this is one hell of a coincidence. And now today CAL announced a ton of cuts as well.
First I was guessing that Jet Blue was going to be bough. With Lufthansa buying a stake in Jet Blue a few months ago, it seemed to fit together yesterday. Both founding member of the Star Alliance and all. It would be easy for them to Front the money to UAL and get the deal dome quite quickly. Now with CAL cutting capacity, it makes me wonder if they are the other player with UAL. Either way, no airline just cuts 100 jets in six months unless something is up.

A significant reduction in airframes is what we may all need to do to maintain profitability. If the price of fuel comes down later in the year, they may not have to actually park the planes. While the commodities markets are starting to indicate a deflation of the oil bubble, they aren't pricing in the possibility of a bad hurricane season, given that the last two seasons were so mild.
For now, though, Wall Street needs to see some response from the airlines' respective managements. Hoping that things improve is not much of a strategy. I expect DAL and NWA to make similar announcements. Hopefully ours won't be as bad, given the strong traffic results DAL/NWA have had lately.

guys, hate to say it but I think there is a fat woman taking out here tuning fork.
This is worse than post-9/11. Thanks to instability in the Middle East, we're now the latest casualties of this war.

PRICELESS!
The point is, ladies and gentleman, that greed -- for lack of a better word -- is good.
Greed is right.
Greed is right.
Greed works.
Greed clarifies, cuts through, and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit.

Greed, in all of its forms -- greed for life, for money, for love, knowledge -- has marked the upward surge of mankind.

This is the dumbest post I've seen on APC. This administration, this president, this blah blah. Not every situation can be attributed to the war. People were *****ing when Clinton was in office, Bush Sr., Reagan.....I see a pattern. Americans are becoming a bunch of whining pussies.

I agree about the worst being yet to come, but I agree with reCAL that it is not entirely the war's fault. Anyone who thinks it is, is the type that blames someone else for all of their problems.
Oh, wait that's about 70% of the country and 90% of the democrats.
We will never see improvements to the country, or our industry until the majority of people quit being victims.
