I never suggested there was or is a great deal on the table for either airline. Both are in a very precarious position, IMHO, if I worked for either carrier, I don't know what I would do (re: voting their TA's).

Yes I figured you are free lancing your skills. The point I made (on every post of this thread) is your ability to negotiate your terms is very limited. You may not need health care (assuming your retired from somewhere else) or any kind of additional retirement which allows you to "negotiate" terms that have higher (hourly) dollar payouts than a younger pilot with a family and less than funded retirement. All the same the (total) cost to your employer is decided by events beyond your control; numbers of qualified pilots seeking the same contract, hourly rates in the host country, general state of pay and benefits in the (flying) population as whole. To put it in simpler terms, you may be able to decide how (your) pie is cut up (hourly, days off, vac, health care, etc) but the size of the pie was determined by forces you can't control nor able to change. BTW, I do work for a union shop.

American, Southwest, and other airline pilots with in-house associations are way ahead those pilots that are represented by outside organizations.

I still endorse in house associations... much better controls... much better interest in the respective pilots’ carrier's situation... much better detail to the respective carrier's operation as to the affect of the pilot group... much better control of finances. As each airline pilot group has their individual needs... we individual contractors do too.
I think AA pilots would beg to differ that they have skated though the turbulence that affecting the industry. As for SWA, there has been tombs written about their ability to maneuver though the competitive landscape. It wasn't that long ago that criticism of their work rules and retirement where bannered about. Not going backwards has made there package look better in comparison to their competition. As I pointed out in the earlier post, they have done briliently in foreseeing trends (in fuel) and other areas where the legacy carriers were venerable. That said, I don't think setting the trend on the demise of traditional retirement plans is something that the SWA pilot group can be proud of.

As an aside, research the number of pilots are opting for early retirement from DAL, USAir, and NWA and seeking employment overseas. Also ask the question why?
The Why is obvious, the What is less so.

You never said how impressed you were with ALPA's negoations on NWA's TA either.... come take a stance!

BTW both paid for

There is also an insured income bond in place for the term of the conract. If the company hires enough pilots to fill their ranks, and my services are no longer needed, the balance of the contract is paid out in one lump sum... no present value reduction... also part of the power of negotation.

BTW, I do work for a union shop.
I'm not shocked... no matter how crappy a deal, be it financial, or work rules, that is negotiated on your behalf you wil still tow the pravda party line and say "Thank you may I pleas have another." Oh well.

We'll both have to wait to see how "crappy" a deal (I) get.

It's a whole lot easier to watch someone else with a gun to their head and not pee in your pants. We'll see how we do. It a collective decision, made by 4600 people all with a different outlook/agenda/need/history.
The one thing I'm sure of is, we can't individually negotiate our own terms. The knives and claws would rip us (all) to shreds.

Agreed. That's why I prefer to be in control of my own employment, and income status. I have no one to blame, or pat on the back but myself.
