American, Southwest, and other airline pilots with in-house associations are way ahead those pilots that are represented by outside organizations.
I still endorse in house associations... much better controls... much better interest in the respective pilots’ carrier's situation... much better detail to the respective carrier's operation as to the affect of the pilot group... much better control of finances. As each airline pilot group has their individual needs... we individual contractors do too.

As an aside, research the number of pilots are opting for early retirement from DAL, USAir, and NWA and seeking employment overseas. Also ask the question why?

You never said how impressed you were with ALPA's negoations on NWA's TA either.... come take a stance!
You may not need health care (assuming your retired from somewhere else) or any kind of additional retirement which allows you to "negotiate" terms that have higher (hourly) dollar payouts than a younger pilot with a family and less than funded retirement.
There is also an insured income bond in place for the term of the conract. If the company hires enough pilots to fill their ranks, and my services are no longer needed, the balance of the contract is paid out in one lump sum... no present value reduction... also part of the power of negotation.
BTW, I do work for a union shop.

The one thing I'm sure of is, we can't individually negotiate our own terms. The knives and claws would rip us (all) to shreds.
