Regarding EMI: I've noticed that if my iPod and cell phone are within about a foot of each other when my phone rings, the iPod's volume will fluctuate wildly and uncontrollably.
I guess that tells me that EMI can have a meaningful impact in places we don't expect - but for a ground-based unit to confuse the FADEC on a 777 in flight? I dunno about that....

Not to say for certain that a military-grade emmitter couldn't punch through, but it would probably have to be specifically targeted. Remember the old stories about aegis SPY-1 radars interferring with airbus FBW?

I am not discounting the effects of Electro-Magnetic Interference - just that I would be shocked if it played a part in this case.
I am completely deaf and hear with cochlear implants. When I bought my daughter a Wii, there was a warning about interference with medical devices, etc. Sure enough, if I get the Wii controller too close to my head, I can hear a faint "warble" sometimes. Now, it could be a Placebo effect, or it could be years of breathing chem-trails...

EMI issues have been tossed around before. There are some folks who believe TWA 800's explosion was triggered by EMI.

One thing is sure: EMI doesn't affect cables and hydraulics

Sorry for the hijack, but back to the thread. How would having use of cables and hydraulics prevent the plane from losing power ?
I'm not sure how many cables the 777 has nor do I know if the HYD system is connected to the thrust of that plane, unless it's a hydromechanical unit using fuel to position the stators.
Thanks for the info,
FF

All I was saying was control inputs that travel via electrical signals COULD be susceptible to EMI (though I have no, nor do I claim any insight on what the conditions would need to be). Steel control cables, hydraulics, and pneumatics cannot be affected by EMI (at least environments suitable for human life).
